Banked turns.

Is it easier to do banked turns if you put some expo on the rudder? I find I need such a tiny movement on the rudder stick that the tail can come round quicker than I expect.

Good idea or should I just get used to it? My interest is sport and scale flying, not 3D.

I use a bit of rudder expo, just 10% or so - but I tend to like things quite twitchy anyway (im more 3d)

Nothing wrong with a bit of expo on the tail, if it helps smooth out your flight then use it. I use 55% expo on my Logo rudd which i've been told is bad. I aasked Duncan Osbourn if he uses expo ion his rudd because like me he flies with thumbs & he uses 5% on top of his CSM720 set up. However my expo varies between each model & i don't think i use any on my Gaui 200 & only a smidge on my 450.

I use 15 % just to reduce involuntary inputs, always have ;-)

Hi Vicki, If your into scale and sport flying try using rate mode as the tail will tend to follow the heli more with less input from you, Especially scale flying looks more natural in rate mode.

I have only just started using expo since doing more 3d-esque flying. Funnels are a touch smoother with it as the finite corrections needed are a lot smaller, making it look nicer, plus tic-tocs are smoothed out. Before that I never used it.

As for circles, it's just getting that sweet spot. Once the heli is moving in the direction and angle you want, you should only really need to make small corrections on the cyclic and tail, it is however, finding that sweet spot I wouldn't bother with expo at this point, because if you're only doing sport type flying you should need it as your heli should be fairly smooth to fly anyway.

I think I settled on 12% cyclic and 10% rudder. When I tried 15% it was 'too much', so split the difference lol.

What is right for one is not for another. Personally I don't run expo much at all no more but thats just how i like the feel of it.

In this case you could benefit more from reducing the travel or slowing the gyro rate so it slows the tail down as this seems more like the cause of the issue with it being too quick.

Rate mode does really help smooth out the turns whilst learning I found. Just be careful in wind or flying backwards as the heli will want to weather vane in to the prevailing airflow, you have to be ready to counteract that on the rudder.

If you are in rate mode when hovering for instance and the wind is from the side the heli will turn into the wind but in heading hold the heli will hold heading but will try to move sideways with the wind.

Thanks. Think I'll stick with HH, I like it and it's how I'm learning my turns. Expo sounds like it will suit me on the rudder. Just to reduce sensitivity around mid stick.

rate mode is.. uh.. how do you explain it? it's the opposite of heading hold. it won't hold your heading. it will just counter any wind pushing your heli but it will not keep your heli pointing the same way. it will just help but eventually will give in to where the wind is pushing it. (sorry my explanation is crap)
