Hi gunnerboy, as with the advice above, it would be a good idea to visit your local flying site if you have one... look at some helis and talk to the flyers. buying a SH heli might be better bought from the heliaddicts forum, or from your local flying site where you could perhaps see it fly.
If you intend to fly at a field alone then the electric helis would probably be a better choice to start with.

The Spektrum range of transmitters DX7 or DX8 would be a good choice to due the vast range of (BNF) Bind and Fly aircraft, Planes & Helis that are available to fly (future proof your interests)
I would guess the heli that the most people have started flying / learning with is the TREX 450 range of helis.

The Eflight blade range from the 120sr through to 300x or 450x or 500 could be a good idea as you could progress right through the range as your skills progress.

Definitely a sim such as the Pheonix simulator would be the best first step. hope this helps...

I have the phoenix sim and it is good, it's me that's crap.
Look at Futaba or JR for Tx (Transmitter) The Rx (Reciever) will come with what Tx you buy.

I have a DX6I and it used for the MCPX and Sim only
I fly everything else on futaba

Good call, nearly the same size as a 450, ready built and reasonably priced. If you've never flown before I'd recommend a lot of time on the sim first before flying the 300X, alternatively get the sim an mcpx and a DX6i. The mcpx will teach you a lot and if you crash 9 times out of 10 you can just pick it up and fly again with no damage.

You will crash at some point so better to learn on something that can take a bit of a bashing and if you don't have a lot of time (which it sounds like you may not have) you won't spend hours repairing stuff.

Finally, welcome to the hobby and the forum; enjoy yourself, that's the main thing. You'll find lots of help and advice here.

Let us know how you get on.

        Cheers.

I got a dx6i and regretted it, switched to a dx8. Some electric raptors have 90 degree 3 servo swash mixing which dx6i can't do. DX6i only has 90 degree single servo or 120 degree 3 servo.

Transmitter wise I would say buy the best you can afford at the start.

A Dx6i would be the minimum I would recommend, if you can try and spend a little more you will save money in the long run.

I started out with a Dx6i, three months into the hobby I've now upgraded to a Dx8.

I started flyin about 6 months ago, never bothered with a sim went from a toy 4 channel co-ax to sr120 to mcpx to align 250 then made that flybarless with spektrum ar7200x and have really enjoyed my Heli journey so far. I know i should get phoenix or some other sim , it would improve my flyin no doubt. Also flown blades 450 3d and 450x and Gaui 425 and much prefer flybarless. Which ever chopper you choose i hope you have as much fun as i have had so far.

There's Hayling Helis on Hayling Island. They have a webby, Google it. Last time I looked they had a long waiting list.

                Best regards.

Hi, a couple of us on here fly at Hook (near Fareham) with South Coast Silent fliers (Google it). One of us would be happy to give you some setup advice and help getting you in the air. To fly at that site you would need to go electric though. The other club worth thinking about is in Knowle Village. We fly in the Village Hall on a Wednesday evening. The hall will take anything up to a 450 size Heli, again electric only. There is lots of advice and experience in either club that could help get you up and running.

I would be happy to help putting a kit together if you chose that route, feel free to PM me. I am in Whiteley.

The AR7000 series will work for just about anything (AR7000, 7010, 7100, 7100R, 7600). I have used the AR6200 on smaller helis and for 450s and maybe 500s I think it's fine but what I didn't realise until fairly recently is that the AR6200 power bus is not as robust as the AR7000 so the AR6200 cannot handle as much current for the servos (I always though the only difference was the amount of channels).

Hi I'm not sure but I think you my be getting the transmitter and receiver confused.

The transmitter is the handset with all the controls.
The receiver is is connected to the model and receives the signals you are inputting into the handset (transmitter)

If your looking for a transmitter to grow into I would go for a Dx8
