I got a 3Ch Syma S107 from my wife for Christmas and have been having a blast flying, occasionally crashing, and repairing it. I recently bought a Blade MQX quadrocopter as, ultimately, I want to fly large Quads and Octs. The controller which came with the MQX was not all that good, so I bought a DX5e which has helped a lot with control. It trims well, and I'm begining to do small, simple, manoeuvres.

Looking back, I think I moved too fast from the Syma to the Blade. It might have been better to get a larger, more stable, 4Ch helicopter to gain some experience of basic manoeuvres before moving on to the MQX.

Can anyone recommend a nice beginners 4Ch helicopter, not too expensive, which will fly outdoors and which is compatible with the DX5e?

I can only think of the blade 120 sr although you will need a calm day for outdoors, that can be said of any 4 channel fixed pitch though.

quadcopters dont fly like helis so imo the experience of flying helis wont really carry over.

you would be better of just buying phoenix fligth sim and learning with that, its only got 1 quadcopter though unless they added more

I looked that the Blade 120 and it looks OK. Browsing around I found the Esky Lama which looks similar, and is cheaper. There seem to be a lot of manufacturers in that market - so which ones are worth looking at, and which ones will work with the dx5?

I hadn't thought about a sim. How realistic are they?

Sorry to keep asking questions but I want to get a good start in this hobby.

Stay away from esky as they are rubbish and apart from anything else won't bind to a spektrum tx.
Sims are a bit marmite although you won't hear many people saying that they aren't a useful learning tool but some people hate using them, me included which could explain why I still can't fly.

Its been a few weeks since my post so I thought I'd follow up. I took animal47's advice and went for the Blade 120, and like it very much. It's a bit big for indoors, but on calm nights like tonight I can have a lot of fun in our fairly sheltered back garden. She does a slow pendulum in the hover, but I've learned to let it happen and keep my thumbs off the controls. I'm beginning to feel confident enough to try small manoeuvres in the garden.

Thanks for your help and advice.
