Beginners and New to Heli's ... Read this FIRST

My first heli was a Hirobo Lama 315B 30 size. The first thing they said when i turned up with it at the club was, `you`re not learning with that are you?` It`ll be exspensive when you crash!` Well yes it would be more exspensive than a Raptor 30 and that`s why I was very careful and took my time and concentrated more. I think I have learnt quicker because of it. I bought a CX2 a year and a half after my second IC just for round the house and practicing nose in. Everyone is different with different hand to eye co ordination levels. Plus, you put large stick inputs in with a CX2, so if you learn with one and then go onto a Raptor 30, say, then you are likely to go straight in. I am a believer in going in at the deep end. That way, everything to come seems so much easier and you don`t have to keep going through that nerve racking first few flights when you buy a bigger model. Like i said. we are all different, but if you find you learn quicker starting with a CX2, then go for it.

I have Microsoft's latest Sim and one of the things you can do with it is view whatever you are flying from the outside. This is a great way to learn RC. Yeah, I'm a fine one to talk, I'm 4 weeks into RC and I'm giving advice already - typical Colonial what?

So you want to learn to fly an RC chopper. If you have a good sim program select the outside-view and start flying. The nice thing is that out of the many, many, many times you crash you can see what happens - as it happens. It's great for learning orientation so that when the aircraft/chopper is nose-in to you - the controls are reversed - but you can-and-will learn how to handle this.

Of all the hundreds of dumb-related crashes I've had - none cost me a penny and only my pride was injured. BTW, I got the sim program that came with my E-Sky V-3 and I'm damned if I can get it to work properly, but since you probably have a computer get yourself a half-decent flight sim, go for the outside view and practice, practice, practice. I've found it a great help and it's saved me some bucks on new blades etc.

Now since you (dear reader) are probably in England, would you go and have a Best Bitter or three for me? It's hard to find in the colonies and costs far too much! Cheers, Hairball PS. Do they still make Watney's Red Barrel? Loved that stuff!

Only downer with msfs is the physics aren't that wonderful, sure it's got better, but for RC Phoenix is the best of the best (at least for helis).

We have too many middle men over here. Everyone wnts to do as little as possible for as much money as they can get. The way i see it is, the more you earn, the more you borrow and spend, so you end up no better off in the long run. Plus, if you work hard, you stay fitter and live longer.

I've finally found the right forum for me having trawled a few US based ones.
Thinking of getting a Blade CX2 having played with a "toy" 3 channel. If I get the Phoenix sim too, will the CX2 TX work with it?

Just checked the Phoenix site and it will. Looks like that's a good place to start. I like the idea of making mistakes in the virtual world! I notive you're not too far away from me - can you recommend any good shops locally for all this gear?

Found a local place in Calne and I happen to be there tomorrow. Going to check them out. They have everything I need in stock (including Phoenix!) so I'm about to take the first plunge into this wallet-emptying hobby.
Anyone fancy a bet on what I break first??
My "spares" list includes blades, skids and outer and inner shafts - anything I've forgotten? I guess the first broken bit will the only thing I don't have a spare for....

Well, I did it. This Phoenix thing is seriously addictive - spent the last 5 hours on it. Haven't touched the CX2 yet but can make a reasonable stab at the CX2 model in Phoenix.

I think they should put a "money saved" feature in the program - i.e every time you crash, it adds to the money saved total -I must be up to 5k or so already!!! How you chaps fly these CP things I don;t know - practice I guess...

Thats actually a very good idea, why not email Phoenix and suggest it to them?

lol yep thats not as daft as it seems! maybe a severity meter and an indicator to show if you hit throttle hold in time
