Here is the gyro. It looks correct from the pictures in the instructions but the instructions are not foolproof :-)

Yep Gyro looks ok, have you tried increasing the gain ?

        Hi Simon,
Tail authority was never the King 2 strongest point but they can be made to fly. Assuming that your gyro is correcting in both directions, it could just be that you have got too much pitch on the main blades. This produces too much drag/torque for the tail to counteract, as it is also running slow. High head speed may sound scary but it's your friend with these wee birds. At mid stick, you shouldn't have any pitch on the main blades??

        Good luck, Marty

Thanks for all your replies so far. I think the pitch idea seems to be the most likely as mechanically it all seems to do as it should. I am waiting for a pitch gague to arrive. When it does I will set it as per the book which is (in normal mode) 0 throttle = 0 to -2, mid throttle = 0, full throttle = 6 to 7. When I set these I assume I should have the hover pitch and pitch trim set to 0 and fly bar paddles should be at 0 degrees all the time?

When set up correctly should it lift off with minimal righ rudder to counter the rotation of the blades then settle into an (almost) hands off hover?

You wuold be very lucky indeed to 'Hands Off Hover', even the best most diligent setup in the world would not really achive that. Forget about hands off and learn to input control to hold a steady hover.

Correct with the hover and throttle trim and also all of the other trims

Would rotor tracking affect this? I have just checked and at half throttle my blade tracking appears to be about 1cm out. I can adjust it so that either blade is high (or low) but I cant get it closer than 1cm.

Rotor tracking should be spot on. The best way to get close is to remove the blades and with the heli on and the motor dis-connected or in throttle hold set the left stick to halfway and then check that the blade grips are level. You can drop an allen key through the blade grip hole and use this to eye that it's parallel with the main shaft. If not adjsut the linkages to get this square, do the same for the other blade. It shouldn't be too far out when you put the blades back on.

Spool up, if it's out just adjust 1 blade, mark this one with a bit of tipex. Doesn't matter which way if it gets better keep going the same way, if worse then adjust the opposite direction.

Shouldn't be affecting your gyro though, might be causing vibes that the gyro wold react to but I don't think this is your problem

Just FYI, you can get finer adjustment of blade pitch by adjusting the link from the swash to the mixing arm, rather than the short link from the arm to the blade (I believe).
Also remember you cant really do 'half-a-turn' on a link, as they have an 'inside' and an 'outside'.

She flys!!! Well sort of. I had a good long look at the tail. Took it apart to make sure it was all OK and decided that the belt, which appeared to be tight at lower speeds could be made to jump a cog or two so I tightened it more. If it was a cam belt on a car I would have said it was too tight but it seems to have done the trick. If I hold the head and rotate the tail rotor it is now almost impossible to make it jump a cog.
I also borrowed a pitch gague and made sure my blades were set right.
Despite the wind I took it outside (my patio is quite sheltered) and spooled up. With the heli still on the ground I was able to control the tail. I even managed to take off and scoot across the patio at an altitude of about 5cm!
So thank you all for your patience and help. I am sure I will have many more questions on my journey.

Well done - nice one - I remember faffing about with my Belt CP V1 for ages trying to get it to into a stable hover...took a bit of effort!!
                      Good luck with it!
