    ... What is/are the reason(s) why there is a peson standing behind the person doing the actual flying of the helicopters?

    It has always baffled me.

    They're spotting potential hazards or obsticles and if in a competition they're calling the manouvres.

                  It's the safest place to stand, if the pilot wrong sticks it, the model will hit him first before it chops its way through to you
