  • Preventing a boom strike...

    I read somewhere that if you increase the pitch to +2 degrees at 0 throttle and tightened the blades in the blade holders that it would help prevent boom strikes. Is there in truth in this?

    Depends how hard you hit the ground.

    You must not tighten the blades too much or they cannot settle into their natural 'lead' and 'lag' when rotating and cause vibration.

    Usually a boom strike can occur when the throttle has been 'chopped' down to zero which would give you 0 degrees or negative pitch if learning, hence the boom strike.

      Might sound daft but you'll have a hell of a time getting the thing down if there's much more than a gentle breeze without a small amount of negative pitch. When you get gusts lifting it up negative comes in handy

        Hi Nerra.

        Yes your right. but you need to set the pitch range to -2 to +10 on normal throttle.

        I also set my throttle to stay at -2 untill just below 50% throttle.

        As a result after the first three boom strikes on any kind of slightly heavy landing I have not had one since.

        I can now hover the heli and if it lands a bit rough I have not had any problems since.

          Very true... in this scenario, descending involves losing so much head speed to stop the blades lifting, it puts you (or the heli!) in a bad situation.

          -1deg minimum is a fair call. Boom strikes only happen when you bang it hard.

            Thanks Dashik. I'm not quite sure what you're saying there... Do you mean you've set it so that the pitch is at -2 until you reach 50% throttle? I presume you've had to program your TX to do this. Did you have the 3 boom strikes before or after you had this setting? At the moment I'm using the stock ESKY TX but I should be a getting the DX7 this week.

            By the way, are you using the standard esky ESC with your DX7? Someone said on the heliguy forum that he could not get it to initialise with the DX7.

              That's right -2 untill 50% throttle then 0 pitch at 50% then +10 at 100% throttle.

              I'm actually thinking of increasing the head speed at 50% throttle to help avoid the rise and fall you get from the heli in hover's. (Probably to 60% throttle at 50% stick travel.

              Boom strikes were prior to this setup.

              I'm using an ar7000 with the specktrum DX7. You wont get the esky Rx to initialise with the DX7 as its not 2.4 Ghz.

                I know the ESKY Rx won't work which is why I'm getting the AR6100 but I wanted to know if you were still using the standard esky ESC (speed controller) ?
