  • can some body give me some advice with my tail :)

    hi guys

been a while since ive posted but ill keep it short

havent done a lot of flying the last few weeks ( weather , new baby , car bla bla )

anyways about a month ago i got a new radio ( dx8 ) and been swapping it all over these past few weeks so as i had a spare few hours i though i woould take the raptor out for a bit and see if i had set it up right lol

bare in mind im new to this ( but not to planks ) i was hopeing i had all the right settings i checked and double checked everthing and everthing was going the right way as it should i fired her up and let it run for a bit and everthing seemed ok i couldnt be arsed to put the training gear on as i didnt have any cable ties so i though sod it

it flys well well i think it does lol but it dont matter what i do i carnt get the tail to hold so im allways putting in left stick to keep it still and as soon as i give it a bit of throttle forgetting i need a bit of stick of she spins

other than that it will hover with no other input so im not far off with the trim it just the bloody tail please help what am i doing wrong ??

it was fine till i swapped to the dx8 but on the other hand i did put 5 tasnks through it today just praticing my hover so it wasnt totaly wasted and i had so much fun i could even hover left and right side i did think about nose in but the way the tail is i didnt have the balls

    thanks guys n gals

Any trim on the rudder? Remove it if so..

      What servo/gyro are you using?

      You in heading hold?

when you set your radio up did you set up the gyro? not sure about dx series but my with futaba and later my aurora i didn't realise until i took off that the gyro was still inhibited, sounds like you're flying in rate mode

nothing special lol came with the old girl
jr 591 servo and csm icg 180 gyro thats what was on it and ive never touched it as it flew ok for me to learn with with the jr radio it was on

there wasnt any trim on it to start with and i did add a bit just so i could hold it a bit better till i can sort it

gram: i dont no my way around this radio yet so im not sure its all foreign to me dont help as im doing all myself apart from reading on the internet when i get a chance

Sounds like you are in rate, not heading hold.

I'm not very familiar with that gyro, so may want to read the manual.

there should be a gyro menu on the settings, i can't remember from my old dx6 but i'm sure you have to activate and set your gyro gain.
              good luck with it

The 180 is a very old basic gyro, I had the 'newer' HLG200 and that wasn't a lot better. You need to have a perfect mechanical setup for it to be of any use and even then it will let go. The gain can only be adjusted by the pot on the front, which I found you either put in far too much gain or not enough.

Having a really good holding tail will make learning a whole lot easier for you as you won't need to worry about having to fly the tail.

I would maybe look about on the BMFA classified and see if you can maybe pick a reasonable Align 750 gyro. They are good gyro's and wont cost you a lot of money. Or if your not worried about spending a wee bit more for a decent tail have a look for a spartan DS760 or a CSM 720, both of which are top gyro's and will see you well for a long time

Also just for peace of mind goto your servo monitor and just make sure the rudder isn't moving on its own, I know its new but the DX8 doesn't have a great rep for reliability.

The 180 doesn't have remote gain im afraid

Here is a link to the manual for you mate

thanks again ive also got on my other raptor ( never flown it ) a CSM SL560 Smart Lock Gyro would this be better to use that the 180 as i dont have funds at the mo due to new baby being 3 days old and a lot of stuff coming in from the usa for my drag car and waiting on them blinking import dutys if the 560 would be better i will swap them over as i dont want to fly the other raptor as i has lots of shiny bit on it lol and dont want to crash that one just yet i dont mind with this one so much

Yes the 560 would be a better gyro as it has remote gain so you can fine tune it from your radio. It will still require a good mechanical setup (never seen a CSM that doesn't) but they are good gyro's and will serve you well

thank you very much ill ditch the little yellow box then thats that sorted ill get it swapped over in the next few days and give it a wirl

when funds are allow ill get a good gyro like a spartan but till then ill have to stick with what ive got but if the 560 is better for then all good

really i should get some one to set it up for me as well but its been fun sorting it myself plus i dont get a lot of time weekends if any but do dueing the week days during the day when most people are at work ill get there in the end it just getting the balls to go that little further every time i take it out but the funny thing is i can fly my heli better for real than i can on the sim ?? but i do mess around on the sim a lot aswell trying different things just to see what happens its been a thing for me for a long time to fly a heli but i was pushed into planes but they got boreing quick didnt mind building them from scratch but there was no thrill so to speek it took me 2 hours if that before i was solo flying but helis are compleatly different but hell of a lot more fun
