The raptor 50 is a good model but the rest of the gear on that one is very basic. You would be best to look on the BMFA for a dx7 radio (get one for roughly £120). Then buy a trex 600 nitro and os50 hyper. Your probably looking at £800-£1000 depending on what radio gear is in the Heli but this setup will see you through from newbie to 3D god

I think that look alike a really good deal for an absolute beginner to be fair. The thing with it is that everything is brand new so everything will work glitch free from the onset.

Ok, people may say that the engine isn't the best choice, the pips is a bit naff, the cyclic servos aren't up to much, wooden blades are no good and you need a LiPo power supply and governor, but that's not the point! This is an absolute beginners heli and it will fly. It will fly just fine and get the pilot through all the initial hovering and bunny hopping moves into steady hover, side on, nose in, forwards flight, inverted and backwards with no sweat at all. It will never be an out-an-out 3D machine in that setup, but it's a tool, a tool for a job at a good price.

You WILL crash, it's all part of the learning experience and beyond. This cheap entry level heli will get you through that.

The only down side to this idea is the fact that it's built for you by someone else. I've always liked the idea of a complete newbie building their own first helicopter as it learns them a lot about how it goes together and works.

I agree with you for the most part Steve but I'm a firm believer in buying the best you can (i went the cheap way and wish I had done it a bit differently). I agree that for a beginner that setup on the surface is good but I just feel that for a little bit more money you could get a much better setup

Yes Del, I agree with you as well.

Bottom line is, it comes down to available budget. If you can spend a bit more, then do. If I had an extra £100 or so available over the cost of the starter kit, I'd probably start with 3 digital cyclic servos, or maybe 5 gallons of fuel to get going with.

That model would be fine but if you aren't in a hurry to buy why not pop over to your local model shop. They usually have lightly used helicopters for sale with high end equipment ready to fly except for the radio and receiver. You should be able to pick up one of those for less than the new one shown on these pages and you won't feel so bad about crashing.

I agree with Steve, it gets you going in one package, at a time when you are new to the hobby and are still finding you feet. It will easly do sport flying, and becuase its new if you have any problems the fastlad guys would be there to help

I also agree about buying the best you can, but having said that we are not talking about a clone here, the Raptor is a proven heli and I am sure that if you get on with the hobby you will want a second heli in a year or so, which IMO would be the time to then get a higher spec 600/700 sized machine

I started with a Raptor 30 and then upgraded it to a 50, I really like the way it flew, just wish I had gone straight for the 50 and not bothered with the 30.

EDIT: The only thing I would try and change would be the tx for a 7 channel (to run a govener in the future), maybe if you speak to fastlad they can subsitute the tx for a 7 channel for a little extra money?

even though RTF i would still strip it down and rebuild so you know how everything works but also a piece of mind for yourself that if anything drops off it will be your fault and not the other person that has built it

Yes it would be spot on for a noob, other wise fast lads would not sell it as beginners combo. I am selling my first nitro now, looking back I should have listened to my bro and bought a raptor 60. Boring storey short I just bought one.
Good luck your going to get lots I mixed views.

Raptor 50 is an ideal beginners heli, thats why we use them for training at the flying school

i started with a raptor 50 with standard futaba servos and got to B certificate with it without needing anything else

even mild aerobatics are possible with standard servos

yes Digitals will be needed when you want more demand from the cyclic, but just upgrade them then

but 7 channels is a definate if flying nitro's
