it the motor dead

hi i fitted a new esc today (jp.energ pro40a) and set it for soft start.I turned everything on and pushed the stick up nothing happened then there was a high pitched beep and smoke started to pour out the motor.
anyone know why have i done something wrong the motor is a emax hl2215-450.
