  • Help with Motors,Pinions and Blades for longer flight times.

Dear members, Ive just about bought all the stuff i need to complete and build my very first 450 helicopter but i have still got to buy an Esc plus motor and pinion as well as some good main and tail blades to finish it off. I was hoping if someone could advice me on a good motor and the right pinion for longer flight times maybe 10mins plus as i only want to learn normal manuvers and to be honest im not really into 3D flying or any type of tricks!!! Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated as ive read that getting certain motors, pinions and blades can make you have better longer flight times than if you were into 3D and other types of flying due to the amount of power you need to do these tricks plus also needing the right set up to achive better and longer flight times? Like ive mentioned im a neewbie to RC helicopters so im still learning all the time so any advice is good advice in my books and i want to ask as many questions as i can whilst builing up my heli and learning on a sim. I have been doing it in stages so im hoping to learn more about motors,Pinions and flight times as well as the right batteries and im hoping i will get some replies to get me on my way!!! Thanks for reading!!!

10 mins on a 450 is gonna be near impossible to do. I can get 10mins from my TT360 but that's running bigger blades and higher capacity 4s.

I wouldn't bother just buy more battery packs, 3s 2200mah packs can be had for $9 from hobby king.

I do understand that but i have read that you can get longer flight times by using a different combination of motor, pinion and battery as well as blades and a certain set up? It can be done as i have read a little bit about it but i was hoping for a better explaination on hows its done and about how the different sized pinions do different jobs when set up correctly? The reason why im asking is i dont want to go out and by a powerfull motor plus pinion thats solely used for 3D flying but only has a 3-4 min flight time!!! I cant really see the fun in only having that amount of time flying a heli when i just want to do normal manuvers and i would want at least 8-10 mins minimum!!! So thats why im asking if anyone could advice me on the right powered motor as well as the correct pinion and battery to achieve those kind of flight times? Maybe i should post this thread on another section? or can members point me in the right direction or do they know of threads with infomation im asking about? Many thanks!!!

You will get 5 - 6 mins of gentle flying with the stock set up and decent batteries. With a LOT of messing about with headpseeds and pinion sizes etc you might get 6 -7 mins - if you have the patience of a saint and dont mind spending hours and hours and hours fannying about you might get 7+ mins - you will never get 10 mins from a 450 that is any fun to fly whatsoever.

As a previous poster said - the batteries are cheap as chips - buy a handful and have enjoyable flights for 5 -6 mins then change the batt rather than a having a barely controllable lump of plastic that will just about hang in the air for 10 mins.

Additionally your concentration level/attention span when you are learning wont last 10 mins - your mind will be fried before your battery is flat!

Thanks again for your advice but please dont take this the wrong way and i know you know what you are talking about but no one has mentioned a certain motor? Align or scorpion or HK maybe turnigy? Or whats the best sized pinion for a 6-7 min flight? 9-10-11-12 ? Like i said im new to the hobby and ive just learnt how to build my heli but i know nothing more about motors or pinions or even the best esc to use? Like i mentioned in the biggining im doing it in stages and i can now build my heli with my eyes closed so i want to learn the next thing to learn which is what im asking about?

One problem with asking for advice is that you often don't get what you expect. The last problem you have is length of flight. The cheapest motor and esc will be fine for starting. Hovering a real heli will not feel the same as on the Sim. To begin with you will be doing well if you can get it up in the air and straight back down. GiantCod do 450 motors for under £10 that will give you 6 to 7 mins of hovering on a 2300mah 3S Tipple and the Twister Storm Esc works well enough and is cheap. An msr or an mcx is a good investment as that gets you closer to real flying. Lessons with a professional are another good option. I use 12T with a standard 450 motor on 3S.

I get 6 minutes with the stock set up on 13 teeth using pretty tired lipos, which always have 30% minimum left depending on throttle use, sometimes 40%.This is just lazy 8s and slow circuits. And that's enough for my nervous system ! If you really want that extra flight time, you're going to have to go nitro I reckon.

I use a 12 tooth pinion on my 450 and in idle up 1 which is a 90% flat throttle i fly for 5 mins and usually put 70% back into the battery when flying hard sport / light 3D using 2250 / 2300 mah 3 cell lipos. In idle up 2 which is 100% flat throttle I fly for 4.5 mins and usually put back about 70 - 75%.

I think you are overthinking this.

Just get an Align Motor or a cheapy for a tenner from Giant Cod along with some cheap 2300 mah Tipples and go and have fun - once you have mastered it then think about a Scorpion motor and different pinions for now just get it off the ground and have fun.

You wont be happy when you stuff it if you burst expensive lipos and break a Scorpion etc etc

You didnt learn to drive in a BMW M series did you???

                    I've also just built a 450 and used a 3700kv motor and a 40 amp esc running a 13 tooth pinion, works well for my sport flying needs to practise new manoeuvres on, time it for 5 minutes. If your stuck the 3850kv motor and black mantis 40 amp esc seem to get good reviews from Giant cod, here's a link;

                    GiantcodRC

It's the 2 products on the top half of your screen, you can run 11,12 or 13 tooth pinions I'd probably go for 12 and tone down your throttle curve, hope this helps.

Wonder if it's also worth considering some asymmetrical blades, like the Spinblade 325mm:-

                        http://www.fast-lad.co.uk/store/spin...5-p-14414.html

Should help you attain maximum flight time. On the downside they are not cheap, and the trouble with starting out usually means regular crashes!
