  • Newbie needs help setting up

Hi everyone, I am new on here so please be gentle! I have been flying coax's for a little while now and want to progress to single rotor CP. I have just bought a Blade SR and am looking for some advice on set up. I have put the training gear on and spun it up on the ground but it just won't stay in one spot - it goes all over. I tried changing the trim sliders to counteract the slide but then it goes off in a different direction and I can't seem to get it to stay steady. I have the standard SR radio and I know that I really need to get a DX6i to get better control but is there anything obvious I am doing wrong?

If there is anyone in the Stafford/Cannock/Wolverhampton area that could spare a little time to help I would be eternally grateful.

You need to actually take it off. You cant trim it while its on the ground really. You need to take off to about 6 foot in a open space before you trim it up.... to get out of the ground effect created by the downward force of the blades. I think the tx should be set up already.... i thought that was one of the points of the sr... that it comes with pretty numb settings ready to go. Are you sliding about on concrete? Can be a good way to get used to the controls... im guessing it was a 3 channel coax? The learning curve for the controls will be pretty steep if you are coming from a 3 channel model. Very very different ball game. Have you got a sim? Its the best way to get familiar with cp helis.

      Steve,

A little more info will be helpful. When you say it will not stay in one place, it's not going to be like a co-ax and sit nice and steady for you. You will constantly be tweaking the sticks to keep it in a hover. This will be harder to do the closer you are to the ground due to the rotor wash. Is the tail misbehaving, or is it the cyclic you are having issues with. Have you checked the setup properly, is the tail correcting in the right direction?

Hi Steve , if you check my signature you will see I fly at the Stafford club .
Bring your model down and one of us will help you out.
I can't be there this weekend as I am away but just pop down and say ho they are a top bunch and great fun too.

If its darting off when you spool up then it needs more than trimming. Make sure the swash plate is level, if you can disconnect the motor and make sure the swash stays level as you increase and decrease the throttle.

OK, I will try to be a bit more precise. I have the training gear on and on a smooth tarmac surface. When it spins up and it is just getting light on the skids it will drift off in a random direction. The tail tends to stay in position if I give it a little left rudder. It does seem to be the cyclic as it can go in any direction. I have only had it about a foot off the ground but to be honest I am worried about crashing it as I never know which way its going to go. I have Phoenix and don't have a problem flying the SR on there - it is a lot more stable, and yes, SaneAdam, my previous flying experience was on a 3 channel Syma - very steep learning curve!!

If its going off in random directions then it sounds like something is loose or its poorly set up. Do a search in the web for Blade 400 setup videos and follow them thru step by step, but to be honest it sounds like you should get along to a local club and have someone look over it for you.

Yes, I think you are right. I will go and have a look at the Stafford club which is not too far away and hopefully be able to get some expert advice. Thanks for all the help, its much appreciated.

I'm not saying it's impossible to work it all out on your own but it'll be a damn sight quicker if you can get someone to show you the basics!

Did you buy it from a shop or an online store? If you bought it from a shop they will help you with it also

No, I bought it online so no support. I thought, perhaps foolishly, that if I could get it into a steady hover I could work out the other bits except it aint that easy!!

Following on from this thread I got the heli checked over and it was found that the swash plate had separated into 2 halves!! Had this pressed back together and seems to be holding although I have not spooled it up yet. Should this be OK now or will it need a new swash plate?

It's only £5 so I would swap it out. A crash due to a knackered swash is going to cost you a great deal more than that. Think of it as insurance....but only until your next dumb thumb moment.
