  • 2 basic set-up questions

    Hello.

I'm in the process of setting up my first ever helicopter - a Trex 550e with vbar 5.0 blueline express. All going well except that when I plug in my tail servo, it shoots across to one extreme and seriously distorts my tail push rod such that I have to immediately disconnect the power and manually push the servo back again to straighten the rod.

I've checked the servo arm is installed the right way around according to the diagram in the manual and that it is centered according to my cheapie turnigy servo checker. Through the vbar software I'm pretty sure that I've got the servo moving in the right direction as well, with the end points set in the transmitter so they show the required 100% per the set-up wizard.

Clearly I've got something wrong though, so any advice on where to look would be gratefully received.

Lastly, is it normal for the servos to make the whining/buzzing sort of sound that they do during bench set-up i.e. without any load? Basic question, I know ...

    Many thanks.

    Alistair

      Hello,

Taking the plunge on going straight to flybarless? - Nice one man!

With regards to your problem, Have you made sure that the correct servo type is selected during the Vbar setup, This usually affects the frequency the servo operates at, (333, 760u etc).

If that has been selected correctly, Maybe try taking the servo horn off, and then putting it back on close to 90, and then check travels again.

and yes, servo protesting/whine is fine and normal, Aslong as it's not screaming and getting hot.

Dont plug the tail servo in until you get to the tail section of the setup.

I would say you have the wrong servo type selected at that step.

What servo is it? If its Align then yes it will make loadsa noise.

Thanks, folks. Servo is a Savox equivalent of the Align 650. I must have missed the part of the wizard where I select servo type, so I will look again at that tonight. Do I select it on the tail setup tab or elsewhere?

              Thanks again.

On the last screen where you do the tail endpoints etc you will see it says a couple of servos. Thats a pull down tab, select the correct servo type from the list.

It might not be blatently obvious at first.

                  Hi Alistair,
When you set up the tail linkage did you centre the servo first? You need to plug in the servo without the linkage connected at the servo to allow it to find centre (don't rely on the cheapy servo tester) then set the horn at 90 degrees and check the servo travel using the Tx rudder stick to see if you have movement on the servo in both directions from centre. If all is ok then re-attach the linkage and continue with the tail setup.

Thanks again, everyone. 99.9% sure my problem is because I didn't set servo type. Cheers

Just to update you all that I looked again at my set-up last night and realised that I was indeed connecting my tail servo to the vbar unit too early, when I was connecting the swash servos. I see from a more careful look at the set-up wizard that the tail servo set-up is the last stage to do and that I do need to select my Savox servo from the drop down menu.

So thanks again for the all the great advice.

Until my next question ... :-)
