You will be surprised just how easy to hover the T-Rex600 really is without the aid of training balls although they can save you some embarrassing moments if you are a first timer.
As for making them and what size don't make them too big as they certainly can make the heli shake bad.
Its just as you say, to save my self a few embarrasing moments. Will wooden dowells be ok even if i have a hardish landing, do you tend to fasten them below or above your skids?

15mm diameter wooden dowelling and 4 tennis balls should do the trick. As Tim stated, if setup properly, the 600 size helis will hover "hands free" virtually, and land very softly due their sizeable ground effect.
I bought a cheap and cheerful set (Quick UK) from local heli shop for my 600 n £15 ish works just fine for newbie, I like them because you can see when the heli is just about to leave the ground as they flex on lift off

As others have said, the 600 is very stable. You'll probably only have them on the first couple of flights until you're used to the feel of the heli, then you'll realise you don't need them
