  • First Methanol flight - thanks for the help

    Hi Folks

Just a thank you to all those that helped me get my Raptor Titan together. On Monday, Nigel FK spent some time with me doing the fine-tuning and Rob from Boxhill was most helpful. The afternoon climaxed in my first methanol hover and landing.

An odd thing did happen that brough the days proceedings to a halt, though. After about the third tank, the clear plastic covering on one blade tip seperated and caused an almighty racket. It sounded like terminal engine/clutch failure to my untrained ear. Fortunately, Nigel was flying at the time and he quickly landed it. The engine was still idling when the blades stopped, so I'm sure all's okay.

Needless to say, the blades are winging their way back to the place from which they were bought.

So, with any luck, I'll be brave enough to take my new toy to my plank-only club this weekend, and manage to bring it back in a similar number of peices.

Again, thank you Nigel and Rob for you help.

    Regards
    Andrew
I've got a perfect flying record - I've not left one up there yet!

          why?

Well I was bought a twister cp v2 for xmas which i totally failed to master. After speaking to several people on this and other forums I was assured that the little cheapy leccys are notoriously hard to fly and that what I needed was a much bigger and heavier IC model. So I took the plunge parted with some cash and now the moment of truth is approaching my mind set is "well was it that silly little leccy heli or am I a complete muppet who will never be able fly helis and now I'm a grand poorer to prove it" lol

So we will see. Anyhow I enjoyed the build so it's not all bad.

                    Good luck Stu!

I had mine at the field today. I must admit that I was $h1++ing myself at the thought of flying it all by myself. I did eventually give it a bash. Factors other than my fear prevented me from anything more than a hop or two, but the ice was broken and I think the next few times are going to be much easier.

Good news is that, for me, when they do get in the air, they fly really, really easily compared to those little leccy things.

                        Hi Nutz

Thanks for the offer. I'm in Wimbledon and I've actually been to your flying site for a visit - its only 9 miles from my home. Unfortunatly, the skeet-shooters were in action that day and the flyers were not due for a few hours still.

I'm trying to join Boxhill heli flyers. They've no more space now, but are currently going through their membership renewal cycle and expect some people to drop out. Hopefully, that will allow me in. Why Boxhill? They're easier to get to than Croyden. I've got to travel through the centre of Croyden to get to you, and I remember that as being an awful traffic hotspot at times.

However, I hope that, if there is no space for me in Boxhill, that I may be able to take you up on your implied offer?

                        Thanks

Well I'm (hopefully) going to be flying at the NMHC at Norwich. Certainly thats where the first flight is going to be on Wednesday. I also have some training time booked with one of the instructors there in a vague hope that I can at least bring it back in one bit on the first outing!!

Thanks for all the encouragement folks - it really does help.

And Phil I would be interest in touching base once in a while if you have time just to compare notes as we seem to be following a similar path?

You don't have to join to visit, but as you said Boxhill is a dedicated heli club so there will always be someone to give you dedicated heli help when you need it.

Sure! Feel free to use this thread to keep us updated. For one issue that I have encountered, view this thread:
                              http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4172

BTW, the recommended throttle curves in the TT Raptor manual are hopelessly too high for the Os Hyper. Mine are waay down - I think I only get to 50% throttle after about 70% of the collective sticks travel! Watch out for that head speed!

                              Cheers
