  • Putting the fuel in

Now the really dumb questions start!
My R50, which I bought used, has a header tank, the clunk from that goes to the engine. The breather from the header tank goes to the clunk in the main tank.
The breather from the main tank goes to the exhaust manifold nipple.

I expected an extra pipe with a stopper in it for filling. Doesn't seem to have one...

So which pipe do I pull off to squirt the fuel in?
I was thinking it should be filled through the header tank so the header tank is full when you come to start the engine.

fill it from the main feed to the engine.. so it should fill the header then into the main tank

Take the line from the carb off and fill through there. This will fill the header up first then it will run through to the main tank.

        Thats right.
Fill through the header tank into the main tank so that the header is full once the main tank is full. Don;t overfill as it will pump on into the exhaust (through the back pressure pipe).

If you have a t-piece connecting pipes to header and carb through which you fill it up, clamp off the piece between the T and the carb so as to not flood the engine.

        Cheers,

Gosh, 5 mins later a postfest on my thread!
Its a square header tank, presume std TT one.
Held on with a single square plastic clip with one screw at the top edge of the tank.
I used to have all the tubes fixed in place with birts of twisted wire otherwise they tended to blow off (on my planks 20 years ago). If you are constantly pulling the pipe off the carb won't it keep splitting or tending to blow off? (as it is pressurised by the exhaust).
I can also pull it off the filter rather than the carb and fill there I think.

ok stoopid question for the day comming up:::::

Im lead to believe the headertank is for making the engine more constant through inverted flight i.e when switching from normal to inverted on a traditional tank setup the clunk will pass through air at some point maybe making the engine stutter.

ok so if this is the case how does it make the difference is it just the header tank is always full and you just run it until the main tank is getting low? im interested to find out why.
                    All the best
                    Tony.

What I do is put a small cable tie on the end going to the carb and just nick it up slightly. That way the tube stays on better, but you can still remove easily enough.

If you have the filter between header tank and carb (recommended) then it's best to fill using the piece of fuel tube between header tank and filter (don't fill through the filter though as you can end up with crud on the wrong side (carb side) of the filter, if any crud gets into your fuel/pump/etc.

                        Cheers,

is it just the header tank is always full
                          Yes.
The header tank will always have it's clunk line in fuel if the header tank is full. You can get air bubbles in there through an extensive 3D flight as air can be sucked into it from the main tank when it sloshes around in a low fuel tank.
It's never enough in a main tank to affect it though - unless you have a fuel tube problem, such as broken/cracked tubing from the main tank letting air into the system.

                          Cheers,
