Why do helis require the flybar (if that's what it's called) on the rotor head when large choppers don't?

its to make it stable i think. The others will give u much more detail

They don't necessarily need one. There are plenty of examples of scale model helis without flybars.

The flybar just acts like a lever which accentuates the cyclic tilt of the disc. A small defelection o fthe flybar results in a large deflection of the disc, making the heli much more responsive, controllable and sharp.

In other words, those model helis that don't have one, have sluggish flying characteristics in comparison to the pod and boom stuff that most of us fly, and are therefore suited to large scale models in both how they fly, and how they look.

        All true.

The size of rotor blades used in model helicopters just dont have the authority of the full size for cyclic control, hence the need for a flybar to assist.

Some full size helis do have a flybar with weights, rather than paddles but mainly for stability.

only some use a weighted flybar system. the bell 47g and huey to name 2.

most are what we call flybarless tho. As has been said we are small and relatively unstable so need added stability of the flybar.

there are some electronic systems now that replace the flybar system Nice idea but expensive at the moment.

see here for info on what effect the flybar has

            http://www.real-kbase.co.uk/how_things_work.html

Im currently testing out a flybar less system

without the flybar the way I set mine up it becomes very unstable but with the aid of electronics you get the stability you want back which makes things like rolls / flips alot quicker
