  • Starter kit. Recommendations please.

Hi Guys, So... I am really new to all this. For christmas my brother in law bought me a 2-Chanel polystyrene @copter. And it was FUN.

So... I went out and bought a 3.5 Chanel (Don't know what a .5 of a chanel is) opal. BRILLIANT. ...

Now I think that I want to go up a step. so, I bought an Easy copter XL Metal. This is good, but things keep breaking. I know the landing gear and the tail rotor are down to my inexperience, but the gear tetth on the main lower drive shaft have a small section missing, and this makes it "Click" while flying. So it must be looseing power and manoverability...

I also bought an easy copter V4 Colibri. this is fun but VERY fragile. It was for flying indoors when I didn't have room for the XL.

I am beginning to think that I need something made out of old Centurian tanks... as with the slightest bump, bits fly off these and I have to stop flying for a week or two while I await the arival of spares...

    Any advice folks?

E-Flite mSR or mCX would be my total noob recommendations.

The mCX is co-ax and very very stable, easy to fly and to be honest a bit docile after a while if you don't have something else to play with as well.

The mSR is single rotor and a bit more lively, but still fairly stable and you can hover it around an average front room after a bit of practise.

Both are very robust, and if you do ding them the spares are very cheap and widely available.

Biggest thing to remember with either, is to chop the throttle just before the crash, you do pretty much no damage if the power is off.

Or if you've got a reasonable amount of indoor space to fly in, you might try the somewhat larger Blade CX2 which is a great heli

Ditto with the MSR - buy the BNF version and get a DX6i transmitter. Don't bother with the RTF as you'll just end up with one more transmitter that will end up on the shelf gathering dust.

You can set up the MSR to be very easy to fly - "inner balls", less servo throw (channel 5), and a bit of +ve expo and it's a doddle to fly.

It's also very robust, so long as you chop the power before it hits the wall/chair/parrot's cage.

Set it up to use the "outer balls", more servo throw and -70% expo and it's more of a handful!

The MSR manual is available online at the e-flite website, so grab it, read it, and see what you think...

I've also got an MCX and to be honest, it's a pretty little model that alas, I rapidly got bored with.

After the MSR... buy Phoenix RC!

I started with the MCX and for an absolute newb it was ok but did get bored with it.

MSR and Dx6i is keeping me very much more involved

Thanks guys. I only have transmitters that came with the Helis. But to be honest I would like to start all this properly. And get , no the most expensive, but, the best...

Phoenix sim is worth every penny and like people have said a good transmitter, something like the spektrum DX6/DX7 is a great purchase and accommodate any future models you may wish to get. I'm also a +1 for the Blade MSR. you can fly that little bugger any where and it'll teach you a lot! Anyways, have fun, be safe and enjoy

Depends on what your budget is but I'd personally get a Blade SR if you're starting out. Larger than an MSR and is a full CP heli unlike the MSR which is FP.

MSR and DX6i to start ( or some will say DX7i if you want to future proof)

The MSR is huge fun, gives you loads of flight time indoors, on windy days, wet days dark nights etc and imo really sets up your "eye" for something bigger. It's robust, cheap on parts and will really shift on a quiet day outside. I think my MSR will always be there for me and friends love it.

It's not wasted money ( and also won't break the bank) and will always be there for some fun even when you get a bigger CP Heli.

                      Have fun whatever you choose
