Shuttle plus

First off, hello all

I just bought a shuttle plus, and it comes with (to quote the ad) rd 6000 sport radio dynamics control by sanwa + charger and protech starter 46 model engine starter high torque 12 volts

I admit it was a spur of the moment ebay buy, I have no experience of heli's (unless you count the easycopter I also bought spur of the moment) and I'm trying to work out what else I need, list so far:


Fuel (which mix anyone ?)
fuel pump

Glow plug heater thingy? + battery?

Training undercarridge

spare blades

simulator


anything major I need, any advice on the above ?

firstly find someone to have a good look over it. Maybe talk to someone in a local club (nicely of course)

fuel, see forum menu for what is mostly used.

Training undercarriage is a MUST.

Wouldn't bother with spare blades on their own as if you prang it chances are you will need a new main shaft, feathering shaft, etc etc etc

Usefull to get a Sim, Phoenix is my prefered choice, but you must state your radio when buying it, as it is shipped with JR radio connection

It will be the best £80 you spend on this hobby

1) buy phoenix.

2) find a local club

3) find out what they fly

4) the rd6000 whilst it works arent userfriendly, not many use them so buddyboxing will almost certainly be impossible. for the sanity of anybody helping you set the model up its worth looking at what they use at the club where you going and get something that is compatible.

5) what servos, engine and gyro are in the shuttle?

RE Phoenix

I have reflex xtr but I am saying go and buy phoenix.

Before you ask why???? It's about £50 cheaper, is much more user friendly, far more acurrate, does not need an intersteller pc to run smoothly. oh yeah the tech support for XTR sucks and you can quote me on that!

oh and the graphics are so much smoother......check out all the xtr's on ebay.

Thanks for the replies, I have seen people flying regulary near me, not sure its a club so will endevour to find out. Phoenix is looking good, I have no idea what gyro's or servo's or engine are in it, find out when I get it wednesday

The Shuttle has been around for 20 years or more, through various incarnations along the way. The current version is the Shuttle Plus 2. I had the Shuttle Plus when it came out about 5 years ago.

It's an old design from a major reputable manufacturer, that is easily out-classed for not a lot more money by Sceadus and Raptors, but it works ok as first heli. Parts are cheap and easily available.

It's like anything in life - accept it for what it is and it won't disapoint.

One word of warning though - do not let the head speed go over 1500 rpm. Shuttles in basic format do not like more than thas at all. They shake and wobble like mad, and for what the heli is, you don't really need any more than that anyway. To get a Shuttle to turn into a performance (??) machine, you need to through a lot of money at upgrades, which then becomes pointless because you might as well get a Sceadu or a Raptor.

It didn't take me long to get the hang of the Sanwa. Nobody else at my club had one so there was no chance of buddy-boxing, but with training undercarriage and step-by-step advice I got there in the end. I had the training skids off after a couple of afternoons.

The servos are likely to be stock Sanwa's, perfectly adequate for hovering but get a digital for the gyro/rudder.

Local guy selling a Shuttle 2, I guess this will be an oldie as well then, wants too much money at the moment, but if the price comes down I may be tempted,

once a shuttle is set up properly it will take you all the way to inverted flight
inverted circuits and pie dish (not much more than those though) the only upgrade I bought was the swashplate pin and guide set (£10)
and the longer washout pin (£10)
