  • New rotor blade questions....

I am working a lot of this out by trial and error with a lot of help from this forum.

Should main rotor blades be replaced as a pair and are they matched in any way or all the same.

Is there a technical way of balancing new blades rather than adding bits of weight and going "that looks about right and oooh the wobble has gone"

    Thanks

generally you should replace them as a pair as they will be balanced together, however if you have 2 identical blades from different pairs you can balance them and use them yes

      Hi,

You should always use a balanced pair, if they come from the same pack then ok if not then thats ok too, but they must be balanced!

I find it much easier to balance blades with micro .01g scales than bolting together, you can get the scales on ebay for under £6 delivered.

I check CofG on a ruler and mark with a pen, compare and if within a couple of mm, then balance with tape on lighter blade - very quick and easy. Also if you end up with a pile of 'spare' blades, you can quickly check for a new pair to balance up!

Scales I have are exactly like these ones on ebay

Yes if you buy multiples sets of the same blades. Even with new pairs always check their balance as they rarely are totally accuratly balanced from the packet

I have an accurate .01 gram scale but that is not the whole story, as they need to ballance from the mounting bolt hole, so a 'teeter-totter' is my preferred balance method and is accurate to a teeniy-tiny piece of tape.

You can re-match a pair of blades from a good separate pair if there was one survivor from each in an 'incident', but they must be same make/model.

You cant really use 2 blades that came out of separate packets. When blades are manufactured they are balanced axially as well as dynamically. Two blade that balance out on a scale or blade balancer can still be off because the bulk of the weight may lie further up towards the tip or forward towards the leading edge of the blade.

I would keep it safe and buy a new set.

To be honest Ads if he is just starting out its not going to make a great deal of differents as long as he does the normal balancing. When I was leaning I match surviving blades with no issues at all. However any dings at all then bin the blade and replace, more so with woodies and a small ding can put a crack lenghwise in the blade.
