The way a collective pitch heli reacts to wind is totally different to a fixed pitch. The collective pitch doesn't tip in the wind, the wind just blows across it and makes it rise and fall - it stays fairly level. To keep it still you do have to tip it over a bit with the cyclic though.
Hovering in gusty wind you often put a bit of negative in to control the altitude. In that sort of wind you simply cannot fly a fixed pitch heli.
One of the guys is talking about building a ccpm heli. He is correct in that cyclic collective pitch mixing is what is on all collective pitch helis, however in modelspeak ccpm is generally used to refer to eccpm where the cyclic and collective are mixed electronically rather than mechanically. The Dragonus he refers to is eccpm.
You can see the difference between the handling of the big and the small helis on the sim, and also see how you need to keep a tight reign on the small ones or they become a dot in the distance, then you loose orientation and crash.
There are many disadvantages to small electric helis in terms of problems with electrics all very close together and twitchy handling. However there is an advantage in that if you have enough room to fly it in your garden than you can get a lot more stick time, weekday evening, morning before you go to the flying field with your proper model (its often calm these times). This is significant in terms of nailing hover, side on, nose in etc. But almost nodoby has a garden big enough to fly forward flight loops and stall turns. you need a field the other side of the garden fence
If you want to fly in lots of strange places then the new DX 2.4Ghz radio is the way to go (and veryt good for a small electric), but there are probably 10,000 35Mhz sets still in warehouse/shops/production with 4-5 different manufacturers and so far only one new make of 2.4Ghz radio.www.heli-extreme.co.uk a good club in south Sheffield
