  • Raptor v2 with a DX7 (more newbie questions)

    Hi all,

First post and it will be a long one so bear with me please

I have been flying a Twister Medevac and I am truly bitten by the bug. Always wanted to fly helis but stuck with nitro cars and dabbled in planks for a while also. Now, I want to get serious!!!!
I'm thinking about a Leccy T-Rex 450 SE and a DX7 but the more I read and see the more I fancy a Raptor v2. I prefer petrol (nitro) but I am still open to persuasion.

Anyway, can you guys answer me a few question please?

    1. What would I expect to pay for a good condition 2nd hand Raptor v2 RTF with and without a decent Tx?

    2. I will use a sim, is G3 one of the best?

    3. I can fly the twister fine (who can't) and it's taught me how little the movements really need to be. I'm still in the habit of using the tips of my thumbs though, gotta stop that!
Would a Rappy v2 be more stable in gentle hovers etc. These medevac lil things are so cute and passive

    4. Will the servos that come with a DX7 be fine and dandy for the Raptor or would you guys say I need something better? If that's the case I can get a DX7 sans servos in the uk off the net?

    5. I live in SE London, a little place called Eltham (any one know it?) and there are no model shops around.
We have avicraft not to far but they are sometimes limited in things.
Could you guys give me some addresses of decent model shops in London (city perhaps) that I could visit just to check on details etc?

Sorry for all the questions but even if you can only answer 1 or 2 that would be great.

I'll be looking for my new Helo in about 1-2 months, anyone selling ?

Im sure you will be told to buy the Phoenix Sim. Everyone on here loves it
As for buying second hand have you looked on the BMFA site thats good for buying second hand

    http://www.bmfaclassifieds.co.uk/

    Try it

Im going from Electric to Nitro this year and often go to Avicrafts flying site in Aynsford its nice to see what others are flying and have a chat

      Welcome to the forum

2nd hand is a minefield, use the BMFA link,i would guess a Raptor 30V2 with decent radio and Tx would be around £350 to £400 but it is a buyer beware scenario

G3 is good but XTR or Phoenix are better and cheaper

get used to fingers and thumbs and a Nitro is not as stable as a Twister Bell but is a lot better than many small electric helis of T Rex 450 type

I have a DX7 and the servos are Ok as far as specification goes but ive heard rumours of them having weak gears that can fail under high flight loads so not brilliant, ive used 1 on a throttle for now but wont trust them on a flight control

i would steer clear of second hand for your first purchase. ask chris said its a minefield and unless you know exactly what your looking at you could easily end up with a lemmon that will cost you more than buying new to sort out.

phoenix wins hands down... best sim for any money and a good chunk cheaper than the rest too.

Chris, i was under the impression that the 821 servos that come with the dx7 are JR 811 with a different badge? I have flown 811s in the past on 50s, never stripped one in the air.

the same gearset is also used in the 8231 that has a lot more torque than the 811 no problems with those either?

          Thanks chaps, nice input.

Still wondering about the servos now though

I like the radio muchly, pricey (for a beginner) but reviews are very positive.

          Thanks all.

            Hi, welcome

I built my Raptor back in the spring. I can only advise building from a kit in that it teaches you so much more about how the heli goes together, how it works, how to set it up and above all - patience

An RTF or second hand may only encourage you to dash off & get it wrong ---expensive They are right, in my opinion a second-hand heli has more questions than answers. Go for a kit & enjoy it.

I have a G3, but before the Phoenix. G3 is good, but pricey. They all rave about the Phoenix. (so want to buy a second-hand G3? )

Alkso, I bought an FF7 before the DX7 came out - s**t. That has to be the way to go, no interference/crystals/channel isssues - double s**t.

Enjoy, this site is brilliant for us newbies

Some stuff on Runryder about them

              http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t...ighlight=ds821

more info if you search the site

Horizon Hobby say they are not rated for anything over a sport fliers 30 size heli

Just wanna be wary of them for the time being

supposed we will have to wait and see if there are any issues with UK supplied servos
