  • Did my first stall turn yesterday

    Hi all
Had a good day at the field yesterday. I did my first proper stall turn It all felt nice but was a bit worried about how fast I was going in FF.

Looking back, how did you guys progress from the basic hovering to FF to simple manoeuvres? I would like to try loops and "on the spot" tumbles or rolls.
Should I calm down and master things like being inverted etc.

Can't work out what order I should be doing things in. I would like to have an "escape route" in hand if (when) things go a little squirrely.

    Thanks
    Cheers, Lee.

before going to inverted you need to be totally confident the right way up.

Circles infront of yourself of different sizes and speed are a good place to start. Obviously go both directions and allow for wind etc.

Then Stall turns, get these nice concentrate on model position and direction of entry/exit

    then loops

    then rolls

    then flips to inverted hover.

that should keep you busy for a couple of weeks :-)

Your escape route is experience Leebert - the more you fly, the more likely you can get out of a screw-up.

As Ade says - get really used to flying the model, and take it all slowly - aim to get those stall turns nailed, and you will then be comfortable in vertical flight.
After that, its a short hop to keeping the elevator in, -ve pitch inverted then back to +ve end elevator off - first loop accomplished - land and stop shaking

I my case that would be months or even years.

I tried my first figure 8 yesterday in fact this was the first time I've tried anything other than hovering side to side and forward and back.
I was only 5' high and every time I tried to turn I lost height and panicked, not wanting to be defeated I tried the same monover but this time 20' high, I still was losing height when I started the turn but I had more time to correct it at that height, I did manage a figure 8 even though it wasn’t very tidy, god my heart was working overtime when I got back to the pits.

start off moving very slowly. keep the nose pointing straight forward and use the elevator to control the speed.

once you got that sorted slowly pick the speed up and start doing a proper banked turn. using elevator to pull it round the turn.

            Thanks for the free lesson
I can manage to move forward controlling the speed with the elevator it’s when I start the turn using the elevator that I lose height, that’s when I cancel the turn and concentrate on the throttle control, that is still a bit like a yoyo at the moment.

your probably banking into the turn too hard and/or using enough backwards elevator to pull it round the turn.

Backward elevator that’s the key I think.

                Cheers
