  • Which Method Nose-in ?

    Hello experienced Pilots

Which method do you recommend to learn nose in as I have no one to
show or teach me at our club,,

I've heard there's two methods,, Bottom up or top down ie.

Bottom up, start from the beginning with trianning legs back on and learn to hover nose in from the ground up
    or
Top down, take the heli on a slow 8s and face it towards you and bring to a hover.

At the moment I can land/take off side on,, do loops/rolls double stall turns etc
even hold the heli inverted for a few seconds,, but just can't get to grips
    with full on nose in,
I can do it on my Reflex sim for as long as I like but when I try "the real thing"
nerves get the better of me and I chicken out!!

Need to know the safest and best way to start,,

    Thanks!

I used to take the model up to about 20 feet and do full piros with it back to tail in,when i was comfortable doing that i would do half piros to nose in hovering, hold it as long as poss then piro tail in again and settle it down, worked very well for me

One easy way to get into nose-in is to fly your figure of eights and gradually make the turns wider until you end up flying with the model towards yourself as opposed to side on. Slow the model down until it's stopped facing you.

Always remember to have an escape route.

I am practising nose-in as Ant suggests.

Once you have got slow fig 8s sorted stop half way round to a nose in hover.

            Easy to say I know

Nose-in high up, can, and does lead to MAJOR crashes, I know, I went there, twice

Think about it, you're at 30 feet (say), and you bring it slowly nose in, and get settled, you start to lose control. . . . . you panic. . . . . .the heli f**ks off over your head (you can control a heli directly over your head, can't you ?). No worries you think, as the heli heads directly towards the crowded pits behind you, I'll just turn round and it'll be tail in . . . . . .except as you turn, your thumbs are moving, so when you turn your heli is doing an airbourn funky chicken, rapidly followed by a ground based funky chicken. The pits have suddenly become deserted ?

IMHO, get out the training gear, and do it from the ground up, if you lose control , you are close to the ground and in less danger. Worst I did once I'd started using this method was to wrong stick and catch the tail in the ground.

Alternatively, if you're close enough, get down to Ade's flying school

I'll finish with a good tip when nose-in. Use the Tx cyclic stick to "Support" the low side of the rotor disk. In otherwords, if the disk tilts to the right, move the stick to the right, and vise versa, also works for forwards and back as well.

Why does it always persist down at weekends ?

I personally prefer the figure 8 method. taking it deeper and coming towards yourself more as you get more confident.

that doesnt work for some tho which then requires a different technique.

of course I agree with Janek :-)

                      Thanks Chaps..

I've been practising on the sim and feel more comfortable with coming in on a
slow wide 8 to a hover.
I can land and take off as many times as I like without a mishap now,, so I guess its time to try it for real at the weekend "fingers crossed"

                      thanks!!

I've taken the gentle softly softly approach.

Once I was happy with steady side on hovvering at head height from both sides, I started to turn it a bit further, maybe 15 degrees, and just hold it there for as long as possible. The escape route is always straight back the way I've come to tail in hovver.

Once happy with the extra 15 degrees, I went to 30 degrees and so on.

I'm now confident in the wind at 165 degrees (where 180 deg is fully nose-in) from one side and about 135 degress from the other. I've held full nose-in in calm conditions for a minute or so, but am still nervous with it.

I've long been happy with flying nose-in in fast forward flight.

Try slowing your FFF down slowly over a bunch of figure 8s make them very fat ones so you go towards/away from you for a longer period.

should help you settle into nose in nicely.
