  • Mixed Fortunes

Well its been a case of mixed fortunes this weekend

To start with a motor shorted on my Twister Bell47, took out the electronics, at £36 + £10 each for the motors, I think Ill give that repair a miss, shame but there we are,

Flew the Baron 30 today, just touched down after a few minutes flying, and to my surprise the enginne stopped, on closer inspection the fuel pick up line in the tank had broken off the fitting, and basically it ran out of fuel, that was a real lucky one, as that could have happened whilst in the air, which would have been interesting to say the least.

Flew the raptor after that and had a real blast, started to do some gentle figure of eights, and with a HH Gyro the difference between this and the Baron was huge, so much easier to control. had a great flight and packed it up feeling pleased with myself.

Before I went, I thought, lets have a quick flight with the Twister3D, Big Mistake, was a bit of a handful in the partially sheltered area I was in, but a gust of wind took it about 30yards across the field, and needless to say it was now feeling the full effects of the wind, I tried to recover it, but I am not that good yet and in it went, surprisingly I didnt feel too bad, (probably still on a high from flyinng the raptor), after rescuing it the damage was not as bad as I thought it might be, and I only have to get a couple of parts to get it up and running again.

Finally, this evening, I had another flight with the raptor, even felt safe enough to remove the training undercarriage and I cant wait to book another lesson this week to continue towards my A test.

Well thats it for now, hope you all ahd a good day,

    Happy Flying

    Keep your chin up mate.

Fuel tube breaking off, and even disintegrating completely is a common problem with today's high nitro fuels. An easy way to spot it is when the header tank starts emptying when the main tank is still half full.

I believe you can get special high-nitro fuel tube, but I've yet to find it for sale. Maybe someone here can halp with that one?

My answer is to completely re-tube all my helis every 6 months, including the bits in the tanks (header tanks as well). It's the bits in the tanks that suffer the worst as they spen a lot of their time completely submersed in the stuff. I use 15% Cool Power in all my helis, but if you're using 30% it might be an idea to do it more often.

I always fly my helis bone dry on the last flight of the day for 2 reasons.

        1. to get de-fuel as much as possible.
        2. the high revving, lean mix bit just before the engine stops is supposed to evaporate (or burn) off the excess oil and fuel from the inside of the engine, which helps to lengthen the life of your bearings.

Is no. 2 correct? I have seen my bearings suffer from really bad rust (and had to change them on several occasions) in plane engines run on the same 15% Cool Power, but I never run them dry.

          Thanks all,
I use Helimix10, so no hi-nitro fuel, the baron is an old model, and I guess I should have done this as a matter of course,
Still a great day today, even with the mishap, im still smiling

I also drain almost all the fuel out at the end of the day to help prevent spills etc when the heli is at home, (Pride of place in the living room at the moment)

          Happy Flying Everyone

we all have days when things just dont want to work there is far far worse to come!

Raptor50luver was having terrible issues with throttle jockeys today, took us a fair bit of head scratching to work out what was going on.

I have been trying to get tuned back into the knight after getting it back together and not having flown (properly) for a couple of weeks.

i think 2 is more likely to cause more damange that good.

when you run it lean, You get a fast fuel burn which puts more load on the bearings.

Notice how much longer OS50 bearings last since the hyper appeared? I think this is down to us loosing the lean spot in the midrange that the SX-H had and Cateye mod fixed.

All I do is clip the fuel at idle at the end of each flight, it helps to reduce flooding especially on the 90s.
