  • Raptor exhaust

    Hi all
Just a quick question... Is it ok to use nyloc nuts on the exhaust? The thread stripped on the exhaust (standard OS - common apparently) on Sunday on my new raptors first set-up outing and the guys there put in some longer bolts and nylocs.
The exhaust doesn't seem to get that hot but I thought I'd ask, just in case.
    Cheers guys,
    Cheers, Lee.

My advice would be No, you would be better off with two lock nuts, preferably half nuts, (thinner), no danger of nylon melting then

OK - I'll swap for nuts and Loctite.

not had a problem with nylocs they are common in my toolbox so get used a lot :-)

toctite can cause the problem to be worse as when hot seems to act as a lubricant!

The Raptor manual tells you to use locktight, I've been told by more then one person not to, give them a check now and then and if the engine suddenly runs lean then they might have come undone, else your clunk fell off!!

I've been using nylocs on my exhausts for years, never had a problem with them so far.

Whenever I bolt a manifold or muffler to an engine, I always use a soft alloy gasket and some high temperature sillicone. It comes in little tubes and is available from most motor spares shops. It is designed as a gasket replacement for cars and motorbikes and happily deals with the temperatures these model engines run at. It also acts like a glue if you like, making doubly sure the manifold or muffler is securely fixed to the engine, and has no leaks.

            Cheers,
            Pete.

Thanks for the tips guys - the Nylocs stay on.
Following on - What do you guys use for a gasket? I saw somewhere (Raptor Technique I think) that recomends ordinary silicone sealant. Is this ok or is blue Hylomar more suitable?
              Thanks again.
