  • What do they set up at shop???

    Hi Guys...
I am now the proud owner of a half built Raptor 50.....
My question is..when I take it to my supplying shop..to set things up..what exactly do they do?

    Just curious

they should setup the radio and servos so that the model behaves as it should giving the right pitch range for your ability. This should include test fly.

ask if the people in the shop fly helis, you would think its a stupid question but you would be amazed. If they dont take it somewhere else and get it done properly

Nigel at heli-lessons isnt far from you.

Nothing against shop's, but I would never get a shop to setup a heli. Buy it, build it (as per manual). Then get together with a local flyer set it up.

If your confident enough that you are able to set it up from the manual then ask a local flyer to double check it over for you and test fly it before going alone.

Even the best get caught out.

thats a bit of an over generalisation Stuart :-)

there are shops and shops... getting a heli setup at somewhere like skyline is a little different to your local shop that sells all sorts and doesnt actually fly helis.

          Granted Ade,

Yes people such as skyline and yourself are trustworthy to do the setup correctly.

Its more to do with that as we are aware a Rc Heli be it a nitro or micro are not toy's and I'm not having a go at anyone in this. Its just that if your going to enter into this hobby you need to have a solid understanding of how it not only operates, but how its built and area's for concern you need to be aware of.

Having a heli setup for you so you just pick it up and go off to your nearest field or in somecases your back garden and then go for it scares the hell out of me.

In most cases I suspect when this happens it will end in a plastic bag and either another potential flyer starting the hobby and ending it in a short span. While if they took time and was helped along the way they'd probably be in it for the long haul and get far more satisfaction from the hobby.

I will admit that I'm talking from experience. Five years ago I bought my first heli from a local hobby store a Nexus 30 in a kit, built it at home following the manual and chucked the sticks on and went in the back garden. Crashed it a few times, then joined a local club and met up with Phil and Angelos and never looked back.

Getting help from your local club or people such as you Ade is invaluable, the problem is finding a good one local to you. Plus as we know not all shop's have the experience to setup a heli if you are tempted to get a heli setup from a shop the only word of advice I would give is to ask for a previous customers no. that they've setup and just take 5 mins to get an opinion from a previous customer before putting your hard earned cash on the desk or worse your health on the line.

          Apologies for the long reply
          Cheers
          Stuart

the number of people that come to me after the garden crashing experience is very scary and i must confess i did it too.

the shops that sell the models just arent giving the customers all the information required.

            all the basic facts like...

            its going to kill you
its going to kill everybody else
            frequencies
            your wife will devorce you!
            local clubs etc.

i am sure most of us saw the damage even an FP micro can do in a recent bmfa news.
