  • 12V Starter & New Pipe

    Hi Guys,

So far you've all come up trumps helping me spend my money. Just a quick question on starters. With my Sceadu 50 Evo and OS 50 Hyper engine, is it necessary for me to shell out the kind of money the shops ask for a Sullivan 12v starter or would one of the cheaper ones suffice ? I'll try and make sure that I get a half decent one way hex starter shaft but if anybody knows of a good one then please let me know.

Whilst I'm here, I guess I should ask about the pipe as well. The one that comes with the Sceadu looks pretty naff and I'm sure most of you will tell me "that's because it is". Being a beginner, do I really need to go for a Muscle Pipe or could I grab myself a standard muffler like the ones they sell at HeliBits.com for 25 quid or so (see link below) ?

Look forward to reading your replies.

No need to shell out on a Sulivan - most of the others will turn over a 50.
Don't know the cheapest muffler for you but I Fly a JR Sulphide 50 with a Hyper in it and I use a Zimmerman steel muffler and it's the quietest model on the field and that's the reason for silencers as far as I'm concerned.

I use a mid range Ripmax (I think!) starter for all my helis and planes. It starts 30s and 50s fine, but struggles a bit with my Freya 70. To overcome this, I have a 6v NiCad electric flight pack (an old cheap one that I got at an auction for pennies) which I can connect in series with my main starter battery when I need it for the Freya - gives me 18v temporarily which fires it up good and proper. Been doing this for at least a year now, and it's had no noticeable bad affect on the starter.

The 25 muffler on helibits.com looks very similar to the standard TT Raptor muffler that comes with the 50. I am using one of these on my Raptor 50 with OS50 Hyper and it seems to be fine.

Best thing is they can be had for <10 on ebay if you are patient. I got a 2nd this way still sealed in packet. It includes a gasket and bolts which is always nice
