  • Lots of help needed for a newbie!!

    Hi,

I've been keeping an eye on these forums for a while whilst trying to decide how to get into rc helis. I was hoping that by reading all the posts that I would be able to pick nitro or electric and which model to go for but I am now more confused than ever!!!!

    Here are the facts:
I am a complete novice and have never flown any type of model before.

    I have a budget of 250 - 300 max.

I want to be able to fly outdoors and indoors if poss.

I have some experience in constructing model rc cars.

I'm not sure whether or not to wait and spend loads on a nice Raptor 30 setup and run the risk of crashing it or spend a little on a cheaper electric CP setp to learn on not worry to much about crashing and upgrade later.

I would like to join a club but can't seem to locate one localy (Worthing, West Sussex)

    Here ends the facts!

If any of you have any suggestions about any of the above I would be very grateful.

    Thanks

Keep an eye on http://www.bmfa.co.uk/class/index.php and see if a good Raptor 30 or poss 50 comes up in your budget, they do pop up but you need to be quick when they do.

To get an electric that you can fly as a beginner you'll have to spend twice that, the little sub 200 all in helis are a bugger to fly even for experienced flyers.

      Go for a lesson first

I'd recomend the Raptor over a small electric CP they arent cheap to keep crashing and repairing, especially a half decent one.

Crash costs on a Raptor would probably be cheaper than any of the CP micro type helis and you would be less likely to crash the Rappy as it's more stable and the fear factor is probably bigger

Welcome to Worthing the land of minimal heli flying locations unless you can be bothered to join an anal club or travel halfway across the world

There is an electric indoor meet on saturday night in Southwick by the way...

I'm going to be negative here, and I apologise, but it needs to be said.

You need to do your sums, before you spend any money, because this is the expensive end of the RC hobby, and I'd hate to see you waste the little you have.

Geez, that sounded all elitest, sorry ops:

Thanks for the advice. Is there a list of flying locations I can get hold of? I live between Angmering and Worthing.

Where is the meet held in Southwick? I may pop along and have a look.

            Thanks

moorehen I am only about an hour down the road near bournemouth. Before you spend any money on anything spend the day at out club field, hang out and chat to the guys and have an hour lesson with me.

It only costs 25ukp for the lesson and that gives you 3 flights on my nitro powered heli under my supervision using a buddy box.

after the day you will know for sure what you want to do.

... but for beginners like me? I've found me a field locally so at least I might be able to do some flying in the summer, binned the idea of a club as no bugger was interested.

Not sure about the locations in Sussex, I tend to crash where I see fit 8O

Ade will sort you out and give you a taster and he's not too far away.

The Southwick thing is held in the Southwick Leisure Centre between 8 and 10pm every other Sat night, I don't often get there as it tends to fall on my night out with the boys at the curry house
