  • Hi Newbie here .....

I have owned a Twister Bell 47 for 2 weeks now and am enjoying it.

I have Cars, Boats, Planes, Motorbikes and now, this Helicopter.

Electric Flight is what I enjoy ..... despite it's limited flight times.

The Bell47 is a good helicopter and seems quite easy to fly. It arrived from Sussex Model Centre within a few days of the order - I also ordered a spare battery at the same time. It was a very good price at 108 for the Helicopter.

When I started the Helicopter up for the first time the flybar became loose 8O looking at it the flybar carrier had severed! Never mind I thought, just get on the phone to SMC and they will see me right. Well, I wasn't expecting the attitude of 'tough luck' to be honest - remember, I had the Heli for around 1 hour and within 10 seconds of starting the flybar carrier broke - anyway, after being a bit more assertive they offered to replace the carrier at cost ................ to my mind it should have been free (but I guess they must have received it faulty and didn't know, so sent it out) - anyway I accepted their offer and they debited my CC. The spare part arrived in a few days.

I thought I would throw myself on the goodwill of 'J Perkins Distribution Ltd' and informed them of the faulty item. Bearing in mind that the part retails at 4:99 - J Perkins supply them to the retail outlets - and J Perkins buy them in from abroad ..... it doesn't take a lot of brainpower to work out that the cost to J Perkins of this part must be in the order of 50p. Very cheap way to buy outstanding Customer Loyalty I'm sure you would agree ........................ well, they don't seem to see it that way.

They told me to send the item to them and they will examine it, then replace if they deem it necessary, seems a long winded affair for such a little cheap item? Anyway, I have sent it back to them ..... I will report back whether goodwill had shone through. I have to add that, in the meantime, they found a used carrier and sent it to me free .... sadly, it was the wrong part so I sent it back (but the goodwill was there to send it in the first place).

I have a funny thing happening with one of my battery packs ..... it works well for about 30 seconds and then the heli loses power and lands - about 1 second later it lifts off like a new battery and flies for another 30 seconds and then does the same, lands, but 1 second later its off again like fully charged ..... it's really annoying.

Both batteries have been treated exactly the same, one is great - giving 8 minutes full flight time ..... the other acts as above??? Oddly the one that came with the Heli is the best one??

    Any ideas?

Ooooooops, sorry, just realised I have been blurting on, and on, and on, on my first ever post!

I'll pop off now ....... and HI all!!!

Tell ya what it is id send the whole heli back to them and tell them you want a refund. First the carrier and then the battery pack and you've hardly flown it. Me personally i wouldnt be happy at all.

Yes, I thought about that actually ...... I paid by CC so I can just get them to sort it if I get no joy?

However, if I got the 'Push-Off' attitude with a poxy little plastic carrier I don't think they will be too accomodating about having a whole helicopter returned and I doubt they would do anything about it!

I also believe that batteries carry no warranty whatsoever??

SMC were clearly not interested in helping me when I rang - the person answering the phone was very sharp and abrupt ...... he finally offered to put me onto the owner - the owner didnt talk to me but offered to send me the part for 3:50 instead of 4:99 .................. lifes too short to argue over such a small amount so I accepted the offer (BUT, it should have been FREE!!)

I'm not sure, but is the Model Shop market ripe for injecting a bit of good old Customer Service?? Whoever opens a model shop that treats its customers right will have a winner on their hands!

Incidently, a BIG thumbs up for the ModelZone shop in Basingstoke ....... I bought a MiniCopter from them in June 2005, I had high hopes for it and it was smart in its own metal case. For some reason, the batteries would only charge once and not again??

Anyway, Modelzone swapped the battery 3 times, the charger once and even the WHOLE helicopter once ......... it seems there was a bad batch of chargers and/or batteries - even the Importer got in on the act and sent me a different charger and battery pack. The service was EXCELLENT and far beyond what I was expecting ................

LightYears ahead of SMC and J Perkins distributors .......

Interesting to hear that SMC are not treating you well, I have always been very impressed with their help and service in the past. They replaced a broken engine mount (not a standard item) on a flying wing I have when that failed due to metal fatigue (and cr4p alloy!).
Maybe you caught the chap on a bad day...

Hmmmm, maybe ...... the Helicopter flyer I know recommended them and the Bell47 - so I did my business with them, he is also shocked at my treatment .... and has changed his opinions of them, he is a member of a big club and has relayed my story to the members there. It was such a short sighted attitude that SMC could have lost s just because the wrong person answered the phone - someone for whom the customer is NOT king!

When I rang - remember this is the same day as the Heli arrived - the person who answered the phone just said they are test flown so there can be no fault ...... I was calm and explained the part I needed, together with the part number. He said, "Order it on our website, I'm too busy to talk now!"

Needless to say, I was shocked .... I thought that kind of terrible service went out in the 1960's????? Anyway, he agreed to ask the Owner if he would speak to me .... the message came back that they will SELL me the faulty items replacement!!!!

Well, life is too short so I agreed .... I didn't want the Heli to go back as I had taken ages to make my mind up which one to get and select an outlet.

The spare battery I received at the same time has now given up the ghost after 2 weeks!! No hope of getting any help there either I would guess??

Hi i think you had a bad experience with SMC. It doesnt reflect on other model shops.

I ordered my twister bell from SMC and after a week i phoned them up to see what was happening and they said they had no stock and hoped to get it in the week after!! Great the website let me buy as if it was in stock. So i cancelled that order, and bought the twiste bell from local model shop for 10 more.

http://www.modelhelicopters.co.uk are a great shop that deliver to me the very next day which you cant beat.

Personally i wont order from SMC again.
