  • Newbie with a Trex 500

    Hi all

I just added a Trex 500 to my fleet.

    Gaui x3 and blade 230s

I am a noob and i can handle the 230s really quite well and trying the odd inverted flip.

    The Gaui just pottering about

I went for the 500 for a bit more stability in the air and to grow eventually into 3D.

But in all honesty it is bigger than my 450 i know duh

what would you run to make it a bit more docile while i am getting used to it ??

    Many Thanks

What model 500 is it? Is it flybarless? Basically the 500 will be quite docile just due to the bigger size, it will be very noticeably more stable and less twitchy than the 450.

A 500 size is a great heli to progress with. You can set it up to be very stable particularly if you have a flybarless unit. You can also dial in a lot of expo/dual rates into your tx to make it less twitchy.

Great choice of heli, I started several years ago with an old Trex 500 ESP that I latter converted to a DFC head (flybarless) and it taught me to fly and even though I have much better heli's I still go back to my trusty 500 to learn new stuff. Parts are plentiful and relatively cheap and mine just keeps going and going, I'm not sure there is much left of the original heli I bought though, it's the Triggers Broom of heli's.

As others have said once you finish the conversion you should be able to dial down the agility settings in the flybarless unit, dialing the headspeed down a little will also help (as well as increasing flight times a little) and you could consider reducing the maximum amount of pitch you have to play with but I wouldn't go to far here as you will need it to get you out of trouble at some point.

I hope you have as much fun with it as I have with mine.

I was in a similar position, flew mainly small 130 sized, my big bird was a 450. I then picked up a 550 and once I flew it life just got a lot easier. Bigger, more stable and forgiving, you just have to treat it with a bit more caution due to it's size. In the end I sold my 450 as for learning 3D I feel it's a bit small and twitchy now so it didn't get flown much, I just prefer the bigger heli.

            Hope this helps.
