  • Possible problem with my Blade 230 s

    Morning all.
I wondered if you could help me before i start spending money that i dont need to.

Last night i took the heli to the local park for a flight.
It flew beautifully for about 5 minutes. It was breeze free and no sun in my eyes .
    Landed it perfectly.
As i walked over to it to switch it off and head off i thought id lift off and have another 2 minutes of flight.
Thing is, it wouldnt lift off.
The blades would hardly turn as if the battery was totally dead.
I had a few things to do so when i got home an hour or so later i tested the battery.
35% on each of the 3 cells and over 3.3v (cant remember exactly how much on the Vs though).
There is nothing caught in the workings, its like new so it isnt that.
I checked the motor at the time and it wasnt hot but very warm. No burning smells.
Ive got 2 batteries with me so ill give it another go lunch time and report back.
Ive got it in my head that the motor is starting to burn out but i honestly dont know.
    Its about 3 months old

    HELP!!!

    Well it did it again.
This time i swapped the battery over for another and it was back in the air again
So i put it down to me flying it for too long or an iffy battery.
I left my tester at home so cant have a look at battery state.

You don't want to let the cell voltage drop below 3.7V at the end of a flight. 3.3V is way too low and will damage the pack.

It could also be a failsafe built in to the mainboard.
Might be worth a look in the manual.
Or Tom might appear soon with the answer

Sounds like you've hammered the lipo slightly as 5 mins of 3d is all I get on the 230s with Turnigy nanotech and the eflite original, I know the manual says 7 mins but in the real world, its not achievable unless you run a low headspeed and fly basically circuits. After the flight ,I'm normally left with 27 % or if really hitting the sticks 21% capacity remaining..

This does definitely sound like you killed the pack but it may be worth mentioning I did have a similar sounding problem with my 180cfx around this time last year. Got 2 flights in, went to lift off for the 3Rd but the blades would hardly turn, picked the heli up and the head felt really tight when trying to turn it by hand. I had only landed a few minutes beforehand so I knew the mechanics should be all good. Threw it in the car and by the time I got home it had, I guess cooled down and everything moved free as it meant to??
I tried to recreate the problem by beating it like it had just spilled my beer and after a couple of weeks trying it did it again!
At the time I put it down to the motor getting hot or maybe a bad bearing but 12 months on its still going strong on the same parts and hasnt done it since?! Now iv wrote this I dont think its really useful haha

I don't know anything about this model, but most esc's if set to Lipo will stop you trying to kill your battery by cutting power if the cell voltage goes below a set preset threshold under load. This normally manifests itself by the heli either not starting or cutting out as soon as you raise the collective.

Mr T, I had a similar problem on a 200 SRX recently, same main motor and same battery as on the 230. In my case complete loss of power after about 2.5 minutes. Different battery worked fine and a battery checker suggested 65% remaining on the 'suspect' pack. I've put this down to a duff cell in the 'suspect' pack causing the internal resistance to rise. A week later the 'suspect' pack worked fine! At about a fiver a battery from the HK UK store I grabbed a few and carried on enjoying myself.

Thank you all for your replies. I cant do 3D (as yet) and as far as i know i wasnt giving it a hammering but thats not to say i wasnt . I was just steadily enjoying myself without taking too many chances as i dont want to crash it. But i must admit i do loose track of time so it may have been longer than 5 minutes. I'll be setting a timer on my phone from now on so as not to overwork the batteries.

                  Thanks again.

Can you not set a timer in your transmitter?
