  • which is easier to fly? quad or helis?

hi guys, reason im asking this is because i have been flying quad for awhile now and i think i am ready to fly helis as i have tried before but couldnt.

also i was wondering if the 130x is still a good heli as i liked mine before but if there are others to consider?

    many thanks

Do you have a sim? Something like Phoenix, AccuRC, Realflight etc. will give you some idea (obviously you don't have the nerves factor on the sim but the physical modelling is pretty good).

If you can fly your quad in manual / rate mode / whatever it's called this week, then you can fly a heli. Both fly exactly the same, though I find a well tuned quad (even my ZMR250) is more stable than even a large heli.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

        thanks for the input guys!

i have had a sim before and tbh i dont like it, i dont think it works as after i used the sim, i tried flying the heli and its just not right, it could just be me.

yes i can fly the quad easily in manual mode.

i am just torn whether to get the mcpx brushless or 130x now

Forget the 130X, get a 180 CFX. It's better by miles and much much easier to work on. That or the mcpx BL if you want something smaller, but the 180 CFX is the best micro out there right now.

Hi mate sims are ok if you have the setting up to 100% real most are 50% default , the mpcx BL is a major handful even guys that fly find it hard as it cant be tamed down , Look at one of the Blade helis with safe mode like the 230 it has beginners mode

Micro size collective pitch helis are about as hard as it comes, so i think you will notice a huge difference. That's not to say you wont be able to master the heli eventually but dont get disolusioned if you find it hard to begin with.

My journey from a 450 APM quid to helis was anything but easy. A few months on an msrx then to a nano and only after 2 years have I just graduated to an Align 450. I'm possibly a slow learner, very time poor and crash adverse so don't doubt it could be done going straight to a 230 but it wouldn't have worked for me. One thing I do agree with however is I'd steer away from the 130x unless you get your kicks from repairing rather than flying.

im guessing il have to get a smaller one to start with, i have my eye on a mcpx v2 instead if the brushless one is too much of a handful

Bear in mind that bigger helis are a lot easier to fly than the micros. The uninitiated often think that smaller should be easier but nothing could be further from the truth, especially when talking about high performance CP micros, you need the reflexes of a mongoose to fly those things.

You may have found your learning experience a lot smoother if you had skipped the micros and went straight in at the 450 heli after mastering the quad.

thank you grumpy but with the 450 i am afraid to crash it then the repair bill will be quite high

Yeah, it's a trade off i guess. With the micros you inevitably crash much more often but damage may be less and the parts are cheaper. On the other hand with a 450 you will crash less (maybe not at all if you are careful) and while parts are more expensive 450's are a lot easier to work on because things are a more manageable size.

My personal experience was that the CP micro i tried (Trex 150) ended up costing me more in repairs and infinitely more in frustration and work bench hours than my entire fleet of 600 and 700 helis combined! Even as an experienced heli flyer it cost me more in all respects than my first 450 cost me to learn on.

Others may have very different experience of course.
