  • Right - time to get started at last.

Hi, i have been watching and reading the forum for 2 years now and have finally took the plunge and ordered a transmitter on monday, now looking for a charging set up?

looking to charge lipo`s of no more than 3 cells for now, ( probably 1/2 cells at first not yet sure as still haven`t made my mind up which heli to go for although it will be a micro/small one). Needs to be at a reasonable price, would like to get a mains charger if possible and associated balance/parallel leads as i would want to charge 6 batteries at once - budget of around £100 -150 all in - any pointers, recommendations or different options you have will be greatly received.

    Thanks Malc.

Welcome to the forum Malc, only advise I'd say is go for something that will take you through the ranks so to speak and charge all your Helis now and in the future. I bought a cheap little charger for to charge my 3s's on and although very good, once I'd bought bigger lipos and Helis it couldn't handle it, so I'd say get a revolex PL6 or PL8 and either make a charge box with good psu's or give Coolice (Ian) a shout on here and he will show you what he does and can supply you. They maybe a little over your budget, but believe me well worth it and they can charge from 1s up to 8x 5000's 6s at a time, unbelievable chargers. It's worth taking a look at what Ian ( Coolice) has made too, with lights, USB chargers and personalised graphics, really are the best jobs going. Hope this helps.

Hi Malcolm, welcome to the forum. I can only echo the advice from Phil above, although I reckon you can get sorted with something that will fill your needs for now for your budget,

Take a look in the For Sale at the moment, be quick.

If you don't want to commit to an expensive long term charger, this is a great budget option - Turnigy Reaktor 250W plus 350W power supply:-

        Turnigy Reaktor 250W 10A 1-6S Balance Charger
Turnigy Reaktor Pro 350W 23A Power Supply (100~240V AC)

This is a rebranded iCharger model (106B+), which is excellent quality. This will comfortably take you as far as charging 450 class heli batteries, but you will want more power once you progress to larger models. But even then it's useful to have a small charger like this one as back-up or for charging your smaller packs.

^^^ +1 on Peteski's post. If you don't have foreseeable plans to get into large helis then IMHO there really isn't any need to go sinking two or three hundred into a very high spec charging setup. The Turnigy Reaktor chargers are fantastic value for money. I use the Reaktor 300W version as my field charger, it's light and compact and does it's job perfectly. Much easier than humping a large high power charger to the field.

Even if you do eventually upgrade to a big bucks high power charging setup the little Reaktor will still be useful for charging smaller batteries plus for taking to the field, so it will never be money wasted.

I'm with Wavey on the GT 500 it's a lot of charger for your ton and if you've deliberated for 2 years on a TX then perhaps your interest is likely to hold.

Thanks for the suggestions much appreciated.

Think I am going to go down the budget route for now as still got lots to buy and unsure of which model as well, so need to keep the budget healthy for now.

              Cheers

So as a quick update I had decided upon the budget route but came across a revo gt 500 from maj at a really good price, so bought this and have been in touch with coolice for a power supply as well. Originally didn't want to spend this much but as so many have stated if I'm in this hobby for a long time and progress to larger heli's this set up will stand me in good stead.

Thanks to all for your comments and advice, much appreciated Malc.
