I have just recently bought a second hand Kalt Baron 30 with everything needed to fly apart from main blabes, bought them and have been trying for days to get the heli up and running, I have fuel going in ok, the glow is working fine, I have smoke from the exhaust when trying to start, and the engine and exhaust get bloody hot (found out by accident) When I try to start it I have melted the rubber on the srater, anyone got any ideas please, I am at a loss for things to try !!

Hi
What engine/glow plug are you using?
Also, what type of fuel and how old is the fuel?
If the exhaust is getting hot it suggests some form of combustion is occuring.
Is the starter turning the motor the correct way? ie. ACW as you look at the front (carb end) of the engine.

Easy, doing my best.
This residue, is it a black like tar substance?
If so, the valve gear (four stroke only) may be gummed up. This can happen if too much castor is used and then left inside the engine. How long roughly since the engine was last used by the previous owner? Also, four strokes are a bit trickier to use than 2 strokes hence my inexperience with them as I avoid them.
Have you had the engine out and checked it rotates freely with no plug?
If you are wearing the starter rubber then it may be coming up against a lot of resistance.
As for patience, when I post on here I normally expect an answer the next day as I don't have internet at home whereas I imagine most people on here don't have internet during the day.
My posts are usually a little out of step with everyone elses.

Cheers for the reply Mark, and the patience reference wasnt intended towards you ! the residue is fuel by the look of it, it just seems very slightly thicker unless its just my eyesight ! when I bought it I was garunteed that it worked, but it hasnt flown in about 6 months, the engine turns freely with no glow plug in, I was told to start it by taking the plug out, turning over the engine with my finger on the exhaust to get the fuel through, then put the plug back and it should fire up, when I am trying to fire it up, it seems like it is firing and even fires faster when I remove the glow starter, I know this is different to 2 stroke, but my buggy fires up with only a couple of light turns, it seems like I need to be turning the engine faster for it to actually fire up ??? oh its a new 12v car battery and its the torque starter rubber housing that got shredded

Don't get impatient buddy - a little research before you bought your heli might have thrown up the exact problem your having.
I,ve been involved with model heli's since the year dot, but I,ve never owned or seen a 4stroke heli.
This probably tells you that they are not popular.
Sorry this does not help you get your motor started - 2 strokes are simple they don't start because they either have to much fuel or to little fuel.
Your motor has the added complication of valves - they may be carboned up or gunged up reducing compession - also if the engine has been opened up the valve timing could be wrong. They also used to come with a set of feeler gauges to set up the tappet clearences -
Hope this might give you some areas to investigate and sort your motor out.
Dave :lol:If it's not fun, your not doing it right !!

No probs Dexdude!!
If you are just starting out, it might be worth replacing the four stroke for a 2 stroke if you can. Maybe even trade in the four?
When just starting out, a reliable engine is a must as there are too many other things to think about. I've always used Irvine 36's as I've never yet had a problem.
Do you have anyone who could look over the engine locally and even test fly the bird? Would save you more frustration and you would also get to see that the thing fly's even if you cannot at present.
When I first started I was very lucky to have someone take me under his blade and when I saw the Shuttle fly for the first time I realised from that point on that I couldn't but the Shuttle could. It certainly helps.
Best of luck.

Flooded
Don't know how relivant this is but with a 2 stroke, if you take the plug out and fuel comes out of chamber it means it is flooded and will not fire, not until the chamber has been emptied. This also increases the resistance of the engine and would put a bigger load on the starter. Do you know what you mixture is ment to be, you could be trying to pump too much fuel into the engine. If you want to put a 2 stroke engine in I can recommend the OS 32max as I know a 3 or 4 people who use it (including me) and have had little or no problems with it.-I don't crash, I just land with enthusiasm.
A couple of 600n's with stuff on them that makes them fly..
A 550 fbl with even more stuff on it to make it fly
And a Mars 470 which needs stuff putting on it to make it fly
And a DX8 too

Only had two, 4-strokes (in planks), all I can say is...yes they get hotter than 2-strokes...they also like a very rich (almost flooded) mixture to start and I found using the special os fourstroke plug, gave better starting and running.
Maybe Check also for air leaks at the intake manifold joints, beyond that and if you have a roughly right fuel/air mixture and glow, but compression seems a little weak, it could be /leaking valves or other mechanical reasons
oh and did you try different fuel?, your buggy fuel would do for a short run, just to eliminate bad fuel
