  • Tail Blade

Hi all, i just took delivery of a new MJX T-34 coaxial 3 channel heli today, i'm new to rotary wing flying so i thought i'll crash this rather than a 4 channel one!
It seems real easy to set up in the hover but when i took it out this evening (zero wind), no problem getting it well up in the air but i could hardly get it to go forwards or backwards.
It almost seems like the tail rotor hasn't got enough thrust to get it moving. I've read that these tail fan helis aren't much cop for outdoors but watching youtube vids the're responding a lot better to forward and backward travel than mine is. Do i need to mod it with a tail fin of a bigger model say?

    Thanks guys.

Give the blades a twist.put a little more pitch on them.put a very small blob of blutac in the noseThere isn't much more you can do.

It's a computerised transmitter so Make sure the transmitter is set up to give you full movement of the elevator, , looks like it works on percentages , had a quick look on the net & found this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=660v4t3gk1c

there will be more if you look , Kd

I know this isn't the answer you want, but ditch it and get a 4-channel helicopter. They're not much more expensive and there are some very good reasons for getting one.

The first VERY good reason is that the 3-channel heli will actually teach you bad habits! Being 3-channel, the controls are actually different to anything bigger! So you are currently learning "muscle memory" that you'll have to unlearn (if you want to progress bigger). Most (90%) of heli pilots use a "mode 2" transmitter. Your 3-channel heli will be different. In short, it's teaching you very little. If you're happy with up/down in your living room - sweet ... otherwise, move on!

The second reason is that fan on the tail! Helicopters have mobility due to something called "cyclic pitch". For cyclic pitch, you need a SWASH PLATE which these little toy helis simply do not have. They are inherently designed to go up/down ONLY. The fan on the tail is a (poor) workaround for the lack of cyclic pitch.

Note that you can get co-axials with a swash-plate if you don't want a single-rotor heli just yet (eg. the Blade mCX2). But to be honest, most 4-channel helis are super-stable too and fairly easy to fly. Do NOT be intimidated by a 4-channel heli. Years ago, they were terrible, but something like a Blade 120SR, Blade mSR or anything with a 45-degree flybar will be (relatively) easy to fly.

Seriously, ditch the toy as it's teaching you nothing and get a Blade mCX2/mSR! (or similar!)

I assume you mean a bigger tail fan rather than fin? Sorry - again but no. It'll just burn out the tail motor quicker. See that big balance bar on the main rotors? It's purpose is to make the heli VERY STABLE. That is, it's designed to stop forward flight. Put a bigger fan on, and the motor will be pushing harder against the aerodynamic effect of that balance bar and you'll probably burn out the motor.

Thanks guys, i guess it's a matter of me not being confident enough to go for a "real" model yet but i've taken on board what you say and i'm waiting for a cheap little 4 channel to be delivered to cut my teeth on. I had to retrieve my T-34 from a tall tree on the last "flight" i had with a washing line prop and 3 bamboo canes taped together
Of course i had an audience!!
I'll keep it for buzzing around in a barn i think. i don't want to spend too much at this stage.
I'll be gratefull to hear anymore comments or advice from ya'all.

Hey Buckshot welcomed me to the forum. Don't be afraid they all constitute toys just some are more capable and with that comes expense. Tom is right though the machine you've got is the Xmas cracker version and won't teach you an awful lot. The 4 channel will be better and before long you'll be like everyone else, in the hobby and loving it.

We recommended the v911 in his other thread Kenny :-) He's got a 4 channel on the way already :-D

I loved my v911, it's still in the loft, I can't bring myself to part with it.
