  • First flips, loops, rolls and crashes!

I finally plucked up the courage yesterday to attempt my first back flips, loops and rolls for real. Inverted flight has been a psychological barrier for me up to now. I've been able to fly inverted fairly confidently on the sim for several months and recently been practicing more inverted flying on the sim, to the point where flips, rolls, loops, inverted hovering etc feel quite natural, although still struggling a bit with inverted orientation in both hover and certainly in FF.

So anyway I decided it was time to try some of these moves at the field, so off I went with my trusty mCPX and almost brand new 180 CFX.

First up to plate was the sacrificial mCPX and it looked pretty frightened by the glint in my eye. So up she went, a couple of quick warm up loops and then an attempted tail in backflip at 2 mistakes altitude. It kind of worked and I can honestly say it went upside down for a split second and then came back upright again, but my god it was ugly! Despite all my hours of meticulous sim practice my collective management and timing was **** poor and it was more luck than skill that I didn't crash it. Second attempt was going slightly better until I put in too much negative collective and the tail blew out sending it spinning into the ground. My first crash right there after nearly 6 months of trying But no damage in the long grass and so straight back on the horse. After finally getting my crash duck out of the way I relaxed a bit and the next few attempts actually went quite well and started to resemble reasonably controlled backflips. In the end I managed about 20 or so decent backflips with a couple more harmless crashes in between. I also managed to throw in some bigger loops, which I found easier than stationary flips, and finally a couple of FF rolls, which went much better than I expected.

So then I got out my shiny new 180 CFX and was undecided whether or not to attempt flipping it as I haven't even had much chance to fly it upright yet. So far only a handful of flights hovering around the garden and 1 flight at the field a few days earlier before it started raining. So anyway I thought I'd get it in the air and go with the flow. So I ran a couple of packs through it in my comfort zone and actually found it much easier to fly than all my other cp micros. The piro compensation makes such a huge difference, I was quite astounded. So on the third pack I thought what the hell and just back flipped it. Unlike the mCPX it just sat there effortlessly and flipped upright again with just a slight flick of negative collective. Just like the sim! So I carried on flipping it again and again and just couldn't get over how much easier it was. Then on the very last pack I got a bit carried away and attempted a barrel roll a bit too close to the ground and bit the dust! Was worth it though and the tall grass limited the damage to a stripped main gear so will be back for more tomorrow.

Went out this morning with my mCPX again to prove I could still do it and it turns out yes I can!

Heh, well done mate, you've definitely got the bug.

And you've found one of the big challenges of translating the sim to a real heli, it's never quite the same. The mCPX doesn't have the hang time of a large model, and while it flips fairly fast, it sinks a lot and needs a good amount of collective to catch. You'll probably also find that the hover position on your collective is very different between the mCPX and the sim, so doing a neat flip will be challenging.

The larger a model is, the easier tidy flips become, and if you're liking the 180CFX, you're going to love it when you first try something bigger :-D

Well done! You might want to think about getting the extended boom for your mcpx v2 - it'll help with tail blowouts.

Thanks for all the encouragement, it felt like a big milestone like when I first flew a cp heli a few months ago.

Tom - yes thanks I made a note to order the extended boom and you were right the tail did blowout on me a couple of times!

Yes the timing on the mCPX is quite different to the big sim helis. I found the 180 CFX a lot closer in feel to the sim, so my timing was a lot better. Can't wait to get my OXY 3 built now

WD Peteski - know what you feel like, I bought a mcpx a good few weeks ago (off a member) to practice my sim time on the real deal, i did loops and flips etc.. but felt very uncontrolled and crashed ALOT, needs some fine tuning!

Also got x2 Trex 450 Pro heli's a few weeks ago (off a member :-)) hovered last week, then yesterday went to field and run 7 batteries through it, 5 of which were stall turns, loops, flips, inverted hovers and inverted FF practice which all stems from practice on the sim, so i was over the moon with it although its still feels a bit over responsive to me, unfortunately half way during one of my loops, the heli on its own just decided to do nose up hover (pointed vertically upwards?) for about 3 seconds, turned to face the ground and proceeded to nose dive... broken canopy, smashed lipo, blades gone and possibly x1 cyclic servo gear strip.. really shocked that no more damage was done! and almost certain i heard loss of power...

Then i have a Gaui x5 sat for a few months as i've never had the courage to take it up, flew it once last week as a maiden, after my 450 ordeal yesterday. i decided to take the X5 for a second flight, bit of hovering and circuits, then said stuff it! let do it.. idle up, straight into an inverted hover nose in, back over again, stall turns with loops in between, no major drama's..absolutely stoked with the X5, the stability compared to any of my other 450's in just unbelievable and confidence inspiring.. so i ordered some more batteries last night lol

Seems we're both at a very similar level, so would be good to see progress as we go along. keep up the practice and good luck..

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Andy, your X5 sounds awesome! I'm sticking with smaller models for various reasons, but really looking forward to flying my new OXY 3 next. Be interesting to see how that compares with the 180 CFX. It's ultimately not that much bigger, but supposedly flies much more like a larger heli.

Enjoy your summer flying, sounds like you are really making good progress too.

Yes, having a great time with the 180 CFX. It's an amazing little heli. After a few more flights, flips and loops now seem very easy. Started flying it more at max head speed in IU2 and the power/weight ratio makes everything seem effortless. This is going to be a great beater for progressing. Only thing is the small size does make it pretty tricky in the wind. But other than that limitation I can't really fault it. The Oxy 3 build is coming along nicely, but haven't got much spare time. I have got the airframe pretty much completed now, just need to install the electronics and set it all up. Probably be a couple of weeks before I get chance to maiden it.
