Funny, I was just thinking about that very scenario while gearing up to flip my mCPX for the first time. I was thinking of restricting my negative pitch so I can just slam the stick full down to climb out more gently. Also going to try it at the field first, so the house doesn't get in the way

Definitely find a big empty space for the first time you flip a heli. Preferably over long grass!

Yep, that's the plan. Lots of space and plenty of height. Seems easy enough on the sim now, but I'm sure it will feel a bit different in reality. Just need to get a feel for the collective and pitch/roll rates during the flip.

LOL, a few years back I'd got fairly confident on the sim too, so braved it for the first time on my mcpx v2 ... I video'ed it for posterity!

Tall grass and good reactions when hitting the throttle hold and you should be fine!

Mint!!! I'm impressed you stayed silent even when it shot over your head and got quite close

You shouldn't need to worry with the older mcpx (coreless motor) it wont shoot up too quickly. If you do give it too much negative the worst that might happen is it may bog the motor and possibly (delending on how good ur batteries are) loose the tail a bit. That was my experience anyway. The mcpx bl, however, will head up pretty quickly!
For that reason the mcpx v1/v2 actauly makes a good trainer for the first few flips. Once you've got the hang of it though the BL is easier to controll (as it doesn't bog) and really is the perfect little trainer.

Thanks Chris, yeah I think I'll just go for it. I think it's more of a physiological barrier for me now. I've been flying inverted on the sim for ages and feels pretty natural, but still struggle a little bit with inverted orientations.

Just do it over long grass like I did and hit throttle hold if you get in trouble ..

Will do Tom, the fields have grown quite a bit in the last few weeks which must be a sign
Actually I'm thinking my 180 CFX will be easier to flip since it responds much closer to the sim than my mCPX. But will still experiment with the mCPX first as it's unlikely to get damaged if I run out of talent. Then when I've built up some confidence I'll give it a go with the 180, which should then be easier. That's my thinking anyway.

Having plenty of space available has proven to be crucial during my recent initiation into inverted flight. After 60+ hrs of sim I received my first cp heli (nano-sized) and on the maiden flight in a big park I rolled it and kept it inverted for a couple of minutes. At that time, however, I didn't appreciate how much space I was using to fly inverted.

Some time later I decided to fly it near my place in a green area bounded by a building on one side and tall bushes on the other. It was a disaster. On the first failed attempt to fly inverted it went into the bushes so deep that I couldn't find the thing (I felt tempted to apply some throttle to get an idea where it was). On my second attempt it went straight towards me and I had to duck away to avoid getting hit. And on the third and last attempt I hit a manhole cover and broke one blade badly.

So this weekend I decided to go to a proper park again to give myself plenty of space. I could flip, roll and fly inverted without much trouble; simply because there was enough space for me to be clumsy without hitting anything. (I should add that on my first roll I forgot to switch to idle up. As the helicopter was going down inverted I kept moving the throttle stick down hoping for some thrust to lift it. In the end I hit throttle hold although there was really nothing to hold as the throttle stick was completely down by then. Well, at least I kept the blades flat upon impact as that is the way I set the pitch curve in TH).

                              Good luck with it.

Nice one! Yes I learnt very early on to fly in an open space to minimise risk of crashing. Space buys you valuable time to sort your act out!

Would you believe I haven't crashed any of my cp helis yet after 100+ flights in total (except for my nQX quad doing silly stuff in the house or losing sight of it at the field). I am being pretty conservative with my flying, but a lot of it is down to flying in a large field. I would certainly have crashed a lot early on if I was attempting to learn things in the garden. In fact it's only quite recently I've started flying regularly in the garden now I have the confidence to fly comfortably in a tighter space.
