Starting on a 500 size collective pitch is a bit of a challenge! Perhaps check out the flight school vids ...

I honestly doubt it is with those settings! Where are you? Have you looked for a local club you could visit? Get the heli checked over by an experienced flyer?Originally posted by wouldbeflyer View PostAt the moment I've dropped it to 80 and 30 expo on all but it is still very livelyTom

Never too old! You're just starting with something that many would have worked towards! I flew my first 500 only after I'd progressed through a fixed pitch micro, then a 450. I was a fairly competent flyer before I braved a 500. That said, the bigger the heli, the more stable it normally is so whilst a 500 is quite intimidating, it should be fairly tame at the controls.Originally posted by wouldbeflyer View PostMaybe I'm just too old, seemed like a good idea at the time.I'm in Chatham,Kent
You said you'd converted it to flybarless yourself? Probably worth getting somebody experienced to check it! I think there are other people on this site from Kent. I suggest you start a new thread asking for local help!

But an experienced hobbyist would still be able to check it over. Make sure the curves were all right, that the FBL unit was configured correctly with the right amount of pitch etc. They'd also probably be able to hover it (even in an indoor meet) to make sure it wasn't overtly twitchy. If you can fly an mcpx, a 500 should be easier once you get past the fear factor.Originally posted by wouldbeflyer View PostI went to my local club meeting with my MCPX bl and spent an hour or 2 getting to grips with it and now i can control it in my garage. The advice was great but the 500 is too big for this meeting as its indoors. You did it right, my purchase was spur of the momentTom

You need to be in a subforum to start a thread. Either click on "forum" across the top menu and select one that is appropriate (main discussion or beginners I would suggest). Or from the home page - you can click on a subforum on the right hand side next to existing threads (the column is marked "home", next to "views" and "replies").Originally posted by wouldbeflyer View PostI have looked but have not been able to find how to post a new thread.I just want to ask if any flyers living near Medway would give me some guidance. Not the weather for it really but I am mad keen
Once in a subforum - there is an obvious "new thread" button near the top of the page!Tom

I was in a similar position back in November (I had just started with a little msrx and mcpx). I joined Eynsford club in January and also go to the indoor club at Ashford (only £3 for the evening - very good).
I live in Maidstone so both are roughly the same distance from me. If you are want any local help give me a PM - I'm no expert but I have already had to do a fair bit to my 450x!
It is a bit daunting going it on your own - I'm not flying with any pals or anything either but I have meet a few people who are local so have some more options now of who and where to go flying with.
If you are in Chatham I think you said then you are only down the road (Im in Penenden Heath - so only 1 min from the M20/A229).
I can fly the micro's (msrx, mcpx and 130x down at the Heath) if you ever want to go with someone - but the 450 upwards really need to be in a safe place!
