  • Hi newbie here but not to helicopters

    Hi All

I am looking to progress from a co-axial helicopter indoor to a more powerful outdoor single blade. I am competant with the co-axial but i do realise that co-axial virtually fly themselves.

I am looking to progress to a single blade but not straight to a "full" single blade heli.

I was thinking about this Double Horse 9104 3CH Metal Helicopter w/ Built-in Gyro | RC Models Wiz

Can anyone recommend if this type is any good for a progression heli rather than jumping straight into an expensive single blade and destroying it on its maiden flight.

Thanks in advance and glad to be a part of this site

    Graeme

tbh not the best. i ve been flying/crashing about 2 years and up until recently have bought and flown blade helis. lots of people on here hate them but for a beginner theyre great. easy and cheap to repair. good warranty backup and pretty good to fly. im not sure that youll find anything relatively easy to fly outdoors as ideally it needs to be quite largerelatively speaking) ie 450 size to be controllable. if i was you i would buy a micro like a blade msr/msrx as the next step.. indoor heli only but considerably harder to fly than coax and quite a bit easier than collective pitch. once you get the hang of it progress up the range to a 450 for outdoors if you have the space. i personally wouldnt get a collective pitch heli smaller than a 450 as they are very very twitchy

        hi Stuart

Thanks for your reply, its a mine field out there. I have just been reading the beginners thread and i am at the stage of progressing, its just i dont want to buy a new single rotor (no co-axial) helicopter and crash it because the handle so much differently

I dont have one but the Double Horse 9104 gets nothing but bad reviews as far as I've seen, probably best avoided even at the bargain basement price.

You might be better getting a cheap fixed pitch single rotor micro such as the WL Toys V911, get at least a few weeks practice to see how you get along with it (they are very different to a co-axial) then if you feel ready for it look at getting a 'proper' grown up collective pitch heli?

I'd second the Blade MSR or MSRx route, good heli's with good spare part availability for when you crash and folks with knowledge to help you fix them. Accept it you will crash, most of us still do from time to time even after several years and you need to budget for it.

                Walkera Super CP

I am sorry for asking so many questions but there are so many out there

Walkera s&&te I've got one you can have. I'm only in runcorn. Esky also not very good. Stick to blade and you won't have problems. Msrx and a dx6i is the way to go dx6 will work with pretty much anything and is a good tx, msrx is pretty indestuctible i only ever broke blades and links.Revolution models in Warrington generally keep all the blade spares in so you don't have to wait for parcels

There is a simple way forward here, and that is Blade.

                          Walkera are mostly shite.
                          Double Horse are utter crap.

If you cant buy it at a respectable model shop (not toy shop), then steer clear.

The Esky honeybee is also ****ing terrible. I tell you that from battling with it for months, then I got a 450 and realised that it is possible to last more than 40 seconds before crashing.

                          Blade Blade Blade Blade Blade.

I started with a s109 sigma thing. Then went to the nano cpx. Then 450l then 250. Then goblin 570

only ones I have now are the s109 nano and goblin. The nano is great as it generally won't get damaged in most crashes. I fly it outside no worries also and I'm still very crap in general.

Main things I had to replace with my nano were the skids and tail boom (stock one is hollow and breaks easy) got a solid aftermarket one and it has never broken. That and I got it for £60, awesome machine, it's now brushless stretched and dfc. So it flies even better. But when I was new new. I kept it stock

also I wouldn't ever get a dx6. Not enough channels for running a satellite only setup. (And keeping rudder gain) may not mean much now. But later it will suck to have to buy a new trans for that
