  • Yey! Nose in hover just 'clicked' into place!

    I did it!
    (WeIl on the sim anyway)
Just nailed the nosein hover (and slow piro). Been really struggling to control nose in and tonight it just suddenly 'clicked'.
I know to some it is one of the very first steps but i am very happy!
Now to try it on the msrx tomorrow...
I'm guessing it cant be any harder than on a CP in the sim right?!)

Also tried a first hover on a 400 (blade 3D) and that was pretty scary stuff.
But its still in one piece so that's a good start!

Sorry, just had to tell someone (no-one in this house wants to hear about heli's anymore ?!)

Yeah it's great when you've been working to get something down and then eventually the reflexes go the right way and it's there. It's a constant process of these small steps.

Brillint, when doing it for real just take it easy & also work on a bailout each time you turn nose in rather than end up dumping it if you get sudden brain freeze.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

It's a great feeling when it eventually 'clicks'. In the real world of course you have the 'fear factor' to overcome, but getting the technique down to second nature on the sim will make it a lot easier when it comes to the real thing.

              Thanks all for the encouragement.
Moving onto the msrx was no problem. Can now switch from nose-in to tail-in and hover in both directions. Slowly, and compensating with a bit of back cyclic to counteract the msrx tendency to dive forward on right turns!
Tourerjim - I'm not sure what would be a good bailout - I started by dumping it (the first couple of attempts) and also tried the walk around method (take off tail-in and walk to the nose-in position!) but soon got the hang of it. When I did get into trouble after that I simply tried to bring it back to tail-in before crashing? Not sure if that's what you meant?
Did some more practice on the sim as well and much more confident. My hover area is still fairly large but I guess that will decrease with practice.
Just a quick question - what's a good heli to use on the sim (phoenix)? I've been using the Trex-600 (flybared) as it seems to be fairly slowish to react and big enough to see!
I also tried a hover on the Blade 400 3D (picked up very cheap on eBay) yesterday and that was pretty scary. So far all my helis (msrx, 130x and mcpx) all FBL are pretty easy to hover. Is this due to the electronic flybar? The 400 is flybared and seems to be a bit more hit and miss in which direction it will shoot off once off the ground. Could have just been our uneven back lawn and the fact there was a little breeze of course?!

I've been flying helis 5 years, and I still get nervous landing and taking off nose in. way to go on (IMO) one of the biggest hurdles

Grumpy - the fear factor is pretty small with the msrx. Won't be tying on the mcpx, 130x, or 400 for a little while yet! Still just getting the hang of hovering with the CP's. I have pretty much £0 to spend on repairs for now, hence the large amount of sim practice. All my collective heli's were picked up from eBay for less than £50 each. So although I have got into the hobby in a fairly cheap way I have to now find ways to fund the repairs!...

Cheers Planehazza - I'm not sure landing the msrx (nose-in) was that much of an achievement and I haven't managed to take off yet nose-in (can't quite master regaining control after the msrx lurch on takeoff!) I'll start patting myself on the back if I can at least move onto the mcpx!

Well take it as a consolation that flying a small model like the mcpx is harder than flying the sim or a larger model. The larger they are the more stable they are - a few inches of drift is a lot to a 120 compared to a 700 etc

Some people get it easier than others. Me, nose in is still something I like to master better.
A guy we fly together, finds it easier to come and hover nose in, than hover tail in!!!! Crazy lol

As you say bring tail round at same time keeping controlled height so its always worth working on nose-in then whip tail back round maintaining controlled height until you can perfect it, as with all maneuvers always worth working on a bail out, another idea to mention is always try & keep your mind on the left hand stick control, right hand almost naturally knows what to do compare to left hand.

Friend of mine had same problem, to give you same advise sit heli in front of you wherever you are sitting or standing with heli nose-in say to your left first as if you where going to take off at the field, let your eyes get used to the canopy then move to you right then centre & so on, just keep placing it in various position & ill say your be flying nose-in in no time, the difficulty with nose-in is not only the controls but even more so seeing the heli turning nose-in.

I found nose in on the sim very easy to do but in real life very difficult so I went back to basics and put the crash gear back on the blade 400 and practiced taking off nose in on the back lawn it worked for me finally got nose in done.
I found it just more real doing It on my heli and more engaging and the crash gear gave me the safety net back.
