250 or 450

Hi All

To cut a long story short I’m coming back in to heli’s after a forced lay off of about 2 years ( read large house fire), I’m not in a club and so I will only be flying in my back garden and a farmers barn from time to time at the moment, when I was flying regular I had and flew 250’s 500’s 600/700 nitro’s and could do things like loops, rolls, stall turns and a little inverted so I’m no total beginner but I’m looking at this as if I am.

I don’t know what to go for as in a new heli, I’m thinking of a 250 or 450 only because of size and as I have said I can only fly in my back garden/barn at the moment, the 64.000 $ question is what would you go with from those.

how big/high is the barn?if its a good size i would go for 450 myself

I'm not a fan of the 250 size. Doesn't crash like a micro, but doesn't fly like a larger heli. For me, the 130X is a perfect garden flyer (I have a relatively small garden) as it can survive most "incidents" with garden objects/trees etc. For a slightly larger space - a 450 heli will handle better I think ...

There's also the 300X (soon to be replaced with the 300CFX) which is marginally smaller than a 450.

Might b worth looking at Blade 300x inbetween 450 and 250

You can never go wrong with a 450

If you want something that crashes well i wouldnt recommend align but if you rarely crash 250 or 300 is more reliable.

Both...! but depends on the area you have to fly within, even the 250 can take on a fairly big radius.

Thanks for the replys, I didnt give the 300x a thought but I have had a look and it all looks good so long as you do the motor mod.

The cost of heli flying has fallen a long way since you left it, you will probably get back in to the groove quicker than you imagine and bigger helis always fly better. If you've been doing aerobatics with a 700-size then a 450 is unlikely to cut it for you. Suggest you look at how cheap 500s can be had for these days and how little the batteries cost - that would be a great way back in to the hobby before you get a 700 again. I appreciate your restrictions with regard to a flying field, but suggest you look again and see if there's somewhere you can fly a bigger heli as barn flying and back-garden flying will soon become restrictive. (I also hate flying inside if the lighting is anything other than excellent - too easy to become disoriented)

I wold go 450 probably due to the fact as you start flying again you will end up finding a bigger space (farm field) and the 250 will soon be way to small.

Just to expand on your opinion, why is it align dont crash well? I'm a newbie with a trex 450 pro dfc and dont have anything else to compare to crash wise.

I don't think as a generalised statement, "Align's don't crash well" isn't necessarily true. All 250 size helis and above won't survive the average crash without an issue - depending on the crash of course.

The DFC head design though is known to transfer more crash force into the main body of the heli - and in particular the servos.

Yep agreed, ask the boys at the club, I've put my 450 in and straightened the blades and flew it again. On other occasions I've done £100 in damage. It's the luck of the draw and how and what it hits lol

My 250 is the most trouble sum heli I have. Just doesnt fly anything like the others. I dont have a 450 but love my 500.

I think the gaui x3 looks exciting and possibly one of the cheapest of the 450 size. No idea how it crashes or flys but I've heard it's good.

Warp 360 was my choice for 450 size but it is big to fly in doors as the disc is slightly larger and it eats up space quickly. It does crash very well though with my total bill so far being sub£10 from 3 crashes. Admittedly none have been humdingers!

Never flown a 250, but it just doesn't appeal in the same way.

I started flying from 250 and for me it was a good training heli, even in costs of crashes. When I bought 450, I feel more comfortable with controls and start doing 3D after some flights. Of course many simulator's hours recommended
