  • Best model and setup in Pheonix RC to suit a MCPX V2 ?

Im trying to learn the basics within Pheonix, and the controls seems to respond very differently within Pheonix & DX6i vs my MCPX & DX6i

I have got the correct transmitter selected but the throttle stick (excuse my bad terminology) seems to act differently.
    Im sure its something simple.
    My transmitter is a DX6i..

With the throttle in the centre, it spins up but stays put.
    throttle down, generates lift.
    throttle up, generates downwards movement.

So whats the best model, and setup to mimic real life flying with an MCPX V2 and DX6i ?

Also what does the 'Trainer' momentary switch on the DX6i do ?

You need to treat Phoenix as a different model in the DX6i. So, model memory 1 = MCPX, Model memory 2 = Phoenix - just as if Phoenix was another heli in your fleet.

Then, the reason that the throttle behaves differently is because you need to reverse the pitch channel in the DX6i for Phoenix (hence why you need a different model memory to your MCPX). The Phoenix model will then fly correctly.

(EDIT : Scratch that last comment - choose a new model memory in the DX6i, then re-calibrate your TX with Phoenix. Do that first before seeing if you need to reverse the pitch channel)

The switches on the DX6i are labelled somewhat randomly IIRC (I've sold mine now). In reality, the trainer switch is used as a bind switch in most cases. However, with the right cables, two DX6i's can be linked together in a buddy configuration. So that an experienced pilot can train a newbie - must like dual controls when you learn to drive.

(EDIT2 : Don't fly an MCPX in Phoenix. Small helis are rubbish in the sim. Choose a big heli like a 550,600 or 700).

Agree with the above - fly an Avant, TREX 700 or similar.

(then go and buy a Raptor 50!)

My favourite on the sim is the TDR.

Well i took your advise and managed to setup a new profile on the DX6i and yes, it then functioned as expected.

            Thanks for your help....

Now i need to get over the MASSIVE learning curve i have just realised is in front of me.

I have got the hovering OK, but im sturggling with the other basics.

Its hard to get my head around the controls changing depending on which way the heli is facing.

Im sure if i keep at it, something will click, but OMG its daunting....

You will get the hang of it. You did well getting the sim. Think how much those crashes would have cost you!

I think i have managed to crash more times that i have taken off......8-(

So i would hate to think how much....

Does anybody else find that its hard to detect the orientation of the heli at medium distances with a sim?

Yeah, the sim comes with its own challenges. For starters, it is inherently a two-dimensional environment so judging distance isn't as easy as real life. As you say, the helis get small real quick too. There's a couple of things you can do though. I'm going from memory here as I don't have Phoenix anymore, but you can have a little zoom window in one corner which shows a close-up of the heli at all times. Also, you can change the camera to auto-zoom. Also, you can use the roller on your mouse to manually zoom into the heli.

As for orientations - that takes time and practice. Perhaps take a look at John Salt's flying school vids ... RC Helicopters, The Most Fun And Rewarding Of All RC Hobbies.

I cannot find how to display a zoomed in popup window...Anyone know how to access that?

Any ideas why the camera views, i.e chase cam, are disabled in v4 ?

I have read the John Salt's pages, and they are very good thanks.

I will be practicing the nose facing wind, figure 8 first, before the nose facing forward that im trying to do.

Hopefully we get some good weather this weekend,
then once i have sorted my servo glitch,
i can take the baby out for a spin.
