  • Irvine 36 STALLING

I have a TTR, with irvine 36 engine. It starts beautifully every time runs for a few seconds or so (sometimes keeps ticking over in fits and starts without problem) then cuts out (dies), especially if the revs are increased. I have stripped and cleaned out the engine, carb, needle valve and anything else I could see with acetone. I have replaced the fuel lines and intend to fit a gasket between engine and exaust.

When setting up the needle valve on refitting I screw it all the way, then out 1 and 1/2 turns, then in again 1/8 turn at a time as instructed by various manuals, but no change.
Is the glow plug suspect, I tend to think not as it starts so well, could it be the fuel? :?

    Any advice out there.

ps Should I use anything to secure the carb in place.

One of the first things to eliminate is the glow plug - it's possible to have one that gives a reasonable tickover but gives up when asked to do any work.
What fuel are you using? - is it old? .

      Hi

I used to have this problem until I started using an Enya 3 plug. Exactly the same thing happened only my Irvine would cut out as soon as I applied throttle.

Have you got the right plug for your fuel? They are temperature related depending on the amount of nitro you are using.

Regarding your carb, there should be a retaining screw in place otherwise you'll loose the engine when the carb vibrates off!!

      Cheers

try using an OS no 8 plug. it is a good general purpose plug.

Does the engine start to splutter as you increase the throttle. This could indicate the idle is rich. There are 2 needle adjustments. It sounds like the needle you're adjusting is the main one which has more effect at mid to full throttle. The idle is controlled by another needle found inside the barrel. this sets the idle. If this is too rich, the motor tends to idle but will cut out as the throttle is raised. if it's too lean, the motor will not idle properly and probably die.

        hope this helps

          Hi all

Many many thanks for all the info, I will see what I can do.

          Ant, you mention that;

"The idle is controlled by another needle found inside the barrel. this sets the idle. If this is too rich, the motor tends to idle but will cut out as the throttle is raised. if it's too lean, the motor will not idle properly and probably die. "

How do I find this illustrious needle inside the barrel, and how is it adjusted, as you mention I only adjusted the main external needle visable from the outside.

          regards

Have a look at the arm that the throttle servo push rod connects to. If you look inside the barrel, you will see a screw head. This is the idle mixture setting. Another way to check if the idle is too rich is to pinch the fuel line. the engine will run and then speed up before it dies. If it's lean the engine will die fairly quickly.

Essentially, if the mixtures are correct, the transition from idle to full power will be smooth and fairly instant. Be careful though, you may have to re-tune the main needle after adjusting the idle. They work together.
