  • How to tell if a main shaft is bent or not

    dear fellow members,

another mechanical question I have for you all and hope someone would be able to answer my question....

Is there any way or trick to spot a bent main shaft......????

I have 3 main shafts with me atm and not really sure if they are bent or not .... all 3 turns in similar round circle (when viewed from the top).....all 3 main shafts went under some medium hammering since it was stuck in the one way shaft.

Some advice would be really appreciated..

    regards.

Roll it on a flat piece of glass and see if it rolls true.

Best trick I learned is to roll it on a glass or a flat surface.

While rolling it, observe closely one end. If it is bent it will move up and down.

ones thats bent youll have to keep pushing a straight one will roll you can also hear it, if its bent the sound changes where a straight shaft makes a constant rolling sound.

Geez explaining a sound is not easy. hope it makes sense lol

If its really bad it won't roll Just try it and you'll find its pretty obvious if its bent.

the other more expensive option is to use a pair of V blocks and a dial test indicator
but the simple way is to roll it on a sheet of glass (or known flat surface)
when rolling watch the shaft if the one end or middle lifts then its bent
if rolling on a dark surface watch to see if any light appears under the shaft when rolling it, if it does its bent

Roll it on a dusky maiden's thigh. Might take your mind off a bent shaft.

                            Brill movie!

Another way is to stick it in a leccy drill chuck and spin it..any blurring along the edge means bent.
Yet another way would be an arrow straighner.. basically instead of v blocks it's 2 pairs bearings and againa dial test indicator
