  • Newbie QUESTION??

    Hello guys,

I have been practising aggressive hovering and fighting the winds since my heli got setup...(20-24 packs till now) and i still cannot keep the heli stable as the wind is always making it go round and round...and always hits the ground hard when i put the throttle stick down.....But Training gear is a lifesaver and saved me from plenty hard bounces

So i had couple of questions which you guys might be able to answer and enlighten me a bit more

1.Why do people use separate TX lipo batteries when you can just buy one from your local corner store like Panasonic or Duracell batteries?

2.Also is it true that my lipo will last very long?, since i am charging it slow using stock Ace rc charger which came with the combo takes 3 hours to charge 1 battery....and hover like 4 mins with each battery.

    cheers,

    md

    1) We use TX LiPos since they can be purchased once and recharged quickly... they usually hold more capacity than normal batteries too.

    2) Ideally LiPos should be charged at 1C (or more lipo depending) - if its taking 3 hours to charge then you are charging at approx 1/3C which is not healthy for lipos (or at least is not recommended)

Mate regarding the charging...this is the charger I am using atm :

      TowerHobbies.com | Ace T3AC 2-3S LiPo Balancing Charger 110V AC ...

specs :Compact balance charger input voltage 110-240v ac 50/60hz
      output cutternt 650ma x 3.......using gen ace 2200mah 3s lipo

hope this helps...you still think its not safe to use this charger??? yes it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on how much juice I take out the lipo....

      thanks.

The 650mA x 3 just refers to charging 3 cells at 650ma so yeah, your charge rate on the lipo is roughly 0.3C. You need to get it up to 1C so I suggest you bin that charger and look for something with higher capacity, especially if you get hold of some more batteries as you progress...

Thanks for the info... Personally I would agree with Eltezz and put that charger to one side and buy a better one.. To charge that 2200 3S LiPo you need a charger that can output 2.2 amps or 26watts of charging power (2.2a x 12v). You can pick up 50-100w chargers really cheap these days or if you can buy a decent branded charger.. especially if you plan to stick in the hobby/go bigger in the future.

As said before, charging a lipo below 1C is not recommended.. and also aside from that, 3 hours charging for 5 mins of fun isnt much good..

The wind shouldn't do that to your heli at all! It sounds like you've got the gyro in "rate mode". Useful for setup tasks, for for normal flight you should have the gyro set in "heading hold" mode. In that mode, no matter what the wind does, the gyro should keep the heli pointing in the same direction. Or, you may have the gain set too low. What's your gain setting in your TX?

Sounds like your pitch curve has a fair amount of negative for <50% stick. Can you post your PITCH curve?

1.Why do people use separate TX lipo batteries when you can just buy one from your local corner store like Panasonic or Duracell batteries?
Because they are rechargable and last an awful lot longer.
2.Also is it true that my lipo will last very long?, since i am charging it slow using stock Ace rc charger which came with the combo takes 3 hours to charge 1 battery....and hover like 4 mins with each battery.
Get yourself a LIPO battery checker. You should leave at least 20% charge left in the pack after each flight otherwise you will ruin your LIPOs. A single charge for a 450-class heli at 1C charge rate should take about an hour, max. 3 hours to charge one LIPO is WAAAAAAYYYY too long. Sounds like your charge isn't up to the job (ie. not enough Watts) or you've got it configured wrong.

To do three at one time, you'd need to run 2.2a x 3 = 6.6a to parallel charge all three at 1C

Tom I don't mind doing one lipo at a time......I wait 3 hours to charge one pack lool so even 1 hour each pack is good enough for me.....

                  thanks.

                    Your stated pitch curve of
                    >>>> My pitch curves are standard 0,25,50,75,100 in both normal and stunt....but I guess its normal since all 3d flyers learn to fly it this way...

is fine for stunt mode one you've learned to hover, but I don't recommend that for normal mode - certainly not whilst learning. With that curve, when you push the left stick down to drop the throttle, you're giving the heli 12 degrees of negative pitch - effectively ramming it into the ground.

My normal curve is 30,40,50,75,100 ... although whilst you're learning, an even shallower curve of 37,43,50,75,100 might be better.

Only switch into stunt mode (with a 0,25,50,75,100) curve once your natural response to an impending crash is to hit throttle hold, NOT slam the left stick down.

Nah the heli is in HH mode not rate mode and its nose is always facing forwards its just that the wind blow it left and I have to take it to the right and the whole process ends up in a circle....
That's just the wind for you! A helicopter is going to get blown about! Flybarless helis handle this better as the computer compensates for you. Flybarred helis are more susceptible to wind, but learning to work with the wind is no bad thing. Perhaps intially however, stick to days with gentle breezes, or find an indoor club.
