  • Advice for the future

    Hi,

As a beginner the set up i've got at the min is a dx6i trex450 sport and spending a lot of time on the sim, so i was thinking about future purchases may be a trex 550 or 600 unsure about nitro as ive had cant tune a nitro engine to save my life also with the different head combinations would i need to change the TX? Just asking so i know when to start saving as if the missus knows there's extra cash it will be spent on Christmas presents for the kids which will last about a week or be broken.

    Cheers for the advice

I have a 450 pro fbl & 550fbl. I'm pretty happy with the two that I've got now & in no rush to change either (other than latest model syndrome) 550 is a little daunting to begin with-but after a hand full of flights you end up chucking it just as hard.
Anything new I learn on the little bird & when 100% move onto the big bird.
TBH the 550's easier to fly-its like a 450 but in slow motion.

Thanks for the reply, how many channel tx are you using? I must admit i do like the 550 as the lipos arnt too expensive.

hi mate I am not a pro to give advicesince I am new to the hobby...but I know that you need 7 channel Tx to get FBL helicopter. I also have a dx6i which I got brand new and later came to know that you need 7 channel tx to fly FBL.

since I am learning to hover and try keeping my heli safe from crashes, I plan to stay fly barred in the near future even with a bigger heli so that I can make best use of my TX its only 2 months old

        hope this helps

        cheers

DX6 will do the job on either fb or fbl hells BUT its just a basic tx built down to a price. Most pilots find themselves going to 8 or more channel tx's sooner rather than later.
Myself- I have Futaba 10CG (bit of a classic these days) but I needed a better tx because I fly some pretty hardcore gliders & the 'mixes' I use are way beyond a basic tx's ability.

Sorry dude, but that's not right. You only need a 7-channel TX to bind DIRECTLY with an Align 3GX flybarless unit. That quirk however is unique to the Align 3GX (as far as I'm aware) and can be circumvented by using a separate RX (although this is messy). With any other flybarless unit (vbar, Beastx, skookum, Vortex, etc. etc.) a 6-channel TX is fine. No different in fact from flybarred.

Technically you could fly a helicopter with the Vortex using only 5 channels because it does not require a channel for tail gyro gain but if you have more than 5 channels you can assign one to a function, like one of the gains or governor if you fly nitro.
