  • Newbie from Oxfordshire.

Hi all, thought I would introduce myself. I've been playing with various indoor easy to fly helicopters and have got the itch to try a big'ish beasty.
A dedicated forum is the way forward and this one looked very inviting.
I have recently given up smoking and with the money saved was looking at the walkera v450 do3. Im probably biting off more than I can chew but it does look rather tasty and is reasonably priced.
Am I going for the wrong heli or is this tame able for a novice?
Thanks in advance for any info.

    Welcome to the forum!

Please stay away from Walkera, they use proprietary radio and have rather poor parts support in the UK. It's not a heli to buy, especially for a newbie.

Have a look at one of the Eflite Blades (mcpx, 300x or 450x) and a simulator - Phoenix RC or RealFlight 6.5

+1 on acid's advice. If you buy a clone, walkera etc. etc. you will regret it in a very short space of time. I was daft enough not to ask for advice ( I'd not come across heliaddict forum yet) and within a couple of months, I found myself starting all over again with an Align. What a difference it made in my flying progress. Expensive to get going, but worth it if you stick with it!!

Welcome to the forum. I started with at Eflite Blade 450 heli and spektrum dx6i tx. I think a 450 heli is a good size to start with and you can't go far wrong with something like a Eflite Blade 450 or Align T-rex 450. As suggested above you will defienlty need to invest in a decent simulator.

          T-Rex 700N - O.S. 105 HZ-R, VBar NEO (Pro), cyclic - Align BL815H, rudder - Align BL855H, new Align 700 mm main blades, Rail 106 mm tail blades.
T-Rex 700X - 850MX, Align RCE-BL130A ESC, VBar NEO (Pro), cyclic - Align DS820M, rudder - Align DS825M, Align 700 mm main blades, Align 106 mm tail blades.

I cant go smaller than a 450 as I lost an rc plane a few yrs ago due to my dodgy eyesight, I couldn't tell which way the plane was going, it was a dot in the distance and was never seen again.
Ive had a quick look at the trex range but im ment to be working and these beauties need a lot of time drooling over.
            Thanks for all your help.

Ollie, at the moment I fly in the lounge and the dining room. As I haven't taken any light fittings out recently I thought I would move up to the larger heli's.
Im lucky enough to live in an area that has loads of scubland away from everyone.
I did get a cheapy sim a few yrs ago, not sure which one it was but if im going for a trex then their sim is what I should be looking at.

                        Hi mate

I started this crazy hobby in February this year with a Trex 450 and it has given me loads of fun and frustration. The great thing about Align is that spares are so easy to get and that is really important. I managed to fly into a tree on Sunday which meant I need a new tail boom, main shaft, feathering shaft, main gear and blades. The parts will be here within 3 days of ordering and the total repair cost is around £45.

Whatever you buy I hope you enjoy it.

                        Cheers

                        Martin

I know your area well, I was brought up in Haddenham. You have plenty of open areas to fly.
Im an electrical/mechanical engineer, part of the fun must be putting right what you have broken.

Martin, the prices you gave sound good, I thought I would need to remortgage to cover the cost of what im going to break when I get going, my heli will be a tree magnet im sure.
