  • 3GX extra channel Req'd

    Guys, Help please,

I'm working on a GoPro mount idea for my 550e DFC (Using a DX7s Tx) and I have done the CAD design work. The camera is mounted on a hinge mounted to the underside of the frame between the skids looking straight down for landing/takeoff. I have a retract servo to be mounted inside the frame that will connect to the Hinge/GoPro, so my plan was that when I take off I would be able to operate my Aux2 knob and vary the camera aim from straight down to straight forward (90degs of variable movement). The problem I have hit with my master plan, is that although I have a spare channel on my DX7s Tx it would seem that I don't have a spare output on my 3GX to control the additional servo.

How can I get this to work even just say for a single 90deg movement (down to forward), yet still using the 3GX or is that the issue? Any ideas gratefully received (and I guess some humorous p*ss taking as well )

    Thanks in advance
    Cheers Guys
    Paul

    Hey buddy.

The only way you'll be able to add the extra channel is to use an external receiver, such as an AR7000, connected to the 3GX via the patch leads. This removes receiver duties from the 3GX, so unplug the sats connected to it.
Now you will have the extra 7th channel to connect to a servo for panning or tilt.

Hi Ian, thanks for the info, but now I'm even more confused....

I run my 3gx with two sats plugged inc' my TM1000 (for temp & flight pack voltage). So is the AR7000 a receiver and controller of servo's, and I would just be using the 3GX as a gyro but still giving feedback to the AR7000 to control the servos? How would I bind all the items?

Could you do a diagram showing everything as it would need to be connected e.g. servo's, 3GX, 2x SAT's, TM1000, AR7000, just so I can get my head around this (I thought it was going to be easy ).

Pah... Newbie's who'd 'ave em' eh?

      Cheers
      Paul

        Hey.

You're welcome buddy, glad to help.

Unfortunately I can't get you a diagram yet as I'm at my mother inlaws :-) on my phone, so it's difficult to find pages and link them.

It's simple to do though, as you've gathered the seperate receiver will be doing the receiver work, before passing on the control signals to the 3GX which has the servos plugged into it as they are now.
The sats connected to the 3GX need removing, perhaps adding one to the AR7000 as an external satellite. The 3GX should have come with some patch leads, a single plug on one end and 3 with single wires in them the other end, these ones are marked AIL, ELE, RUD etc from memory and corrispond to the receiver channels.
The 3GX manual shows where the other end of these patch leads plug into the 3GX.

The TM1000 just plugs into a spare channel doesn't it? Never used one so going by memory on this part.
I am sure it could go into a spare port on the 7 channel receiver you choose.

There will be one other lead, a single male to male extension lead, which takes power from the 3GX to the seperate receiver. If you are using a CC BEC PRO with twin power wires you could use one of these instead to power the receiver.

Then all you'd need to do is bind the new receiver and set failsafe, check all directions of controls and gyros are the same and go fly. The 3GX should not need its settings changed, as long as it's left in the same position/orientation on the model.

If you're still stuck later I'll find the manual online and post the page you need to see the connection diagram.

Lol, I've always got time for newbies they keep the hobby going and my grey matter exercised ;-)

Many thanks Ian. I think I see what you mean, but if you get a chance and can get the diagrams I would be eternally grateful. I am a mechanical engineer and I much prefer working with drg's. I'm sure I will be excercising your grey matter again in the future...

          Cheers Mate

                Evening Mate.

This is better, a full sized keyboard.

I have attached a screen grab from the Align PC software, specifically the connectivity tab showing the hookup of a standard receiver to the 3GX.

Assuming you're not using an external BEC, your ESC will provide power to the 3GX, the "BATT OUT" then transfers this to the seperate receiver as well.
If you are using an external BEC, then just make sure power is going to both the 3GX and receiver adequately. If you are using a CC BEC PRO, one power line can go to the 3GX and the other to the receiver. In this case I'd also leave in the connecting wire from BATT OUT to receiver as well if you can, as the power will flow to both units nicely this way. Safe guards against any low voltage brownout problems on the 2.4ghz setup.

See how you get on and let me know.
