I feel I'm quailfied to do so...One through experence and Two through not using either MT or Optifuel regularly.

Ok, lets address this 'rust' issue with the fuels we use. The term 'Hygroscopic' means the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment. Our fuels we use are this...hygroscopic!!!! Therefore depending upon where you store/operate your heli's and the percentage of humidity in that place determines how much moisture the un-burn't fuel in your engine holds when it is stored. This will when then be related to the amount of 'rust' you see when you open up your engine and take a look at your back bearing after a period of no use. So IMO you can't compare these types of fuel in this instance.

The second point I want to make is probably the most important one and in most cases is overlooked. If surface 'rust' on the bearing is seen when the backplate of your engine is removed, this doesn't necessary mean your bearing is toast. The part of the bearing that counts is the inner parts of the races where the balls travel around. You can only inspect this when the bearing is removed and disassembled.

I've now been running these engines now for over 5 years and that facts are these. Ive never disassembled a removed bearing and found 'Rust' on the inner races. What you do find is 'impact' pitting on these parts and more importantly only at certain places around the race you will find this pitting. This can only be caused by the force of the engine detonation cycle.....This is a Fact !!

So how can we stop this from happening and prolong the life of our bearings. Well it's a difficult task when we abuse these engine the way we do. We could spend hours working out compression ratios for the particular nitro content fuels, we could then meticulously tune the engine each time we fly depending on weather conditions, but in reality it would mean they would never get flown for fun and we would spend all our time messing about with them trying to get the perfect runner!! The solution is to learn how to detect when your engine is not happy by listening to it and try your best to correct it before terminal damage is caused...

I suppose the moral of my post is all this squabbling about whether or not one fuel rusts more than the next is rubbish. I spent most of last summer flying with a buddy of mine who flies Opti-fuel and I fly Rapicon. The performance and bearing last-ability was identical. Much the same as MT would be I guess.

You buy what you can get hold of, what you like the look of and what you like the price of Its that simple
        Wonder who that Opti-buddy is?!

        Great post Mattie. Well said.
